Thank you for this, looks like Blackbushe in tuesday could be a good one to go for. Any chance of posting up a few more 2.7 models? That's ideally what I'm after with the 2.0 being a back up.

Once again, thank you very much, it's much apreciated.

  • Thanks to the members searching for my Rolls :D

I now know who has been given the job of disposing of it :T and they don't appear to be part of the BCA, or any other, network. I have perused their website and the car is not yet up for sale/auction.

However they do have this if you're interested

Out of interest how much cheaper do these cars sell through at auction in comparison to say a private sale?

is it possible to find out how much a specific car sold for at auction?
  • Unfortunately all auction prices depend on a couple of factors:
Firstly, the nature and time of the sale. A morning or early afternoon sale will be primarily aimed at traders, while an evening sale will be more for the private punter. This is on the assumption that most private buyers will be at work during the day and even a percentage of shift workers will be as well.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the hammer price will depend on who is there - and bidding - 'on the day'. Some people just don't know much about cars and may tend to let their hearts overrule their common sense: Then they end up paying considerably over the odds!
The best advice is, if you can spare the time, is to go to a handful of any auctions in your area with no money in your pocket and no intention of buying to see how the prices run.
When you do go with the intention of bidding you must examine all the cars you're interested in thoroughly, set a price (about 10% under private 'book' price is a good guideline) and stick to it. Never think "Oh, well, one more bid won't break the bank" because the temptation will be to bid again and again until you end up paying far more than the car's worth.
Trust me: Been there, done that, etc
As for historical prices ... Some auctions keep records that are open to the public, but most do not. In the current 'economic climate' they wouldn't be of much use to you as, while most car prices are in freefall, others are actually appreciating by the day

On the whole, yes it is the smaller, more economical, cars that are holding their prices - and even appreciating in 'value'. In the latter category you will find some iconic cars: Mini One, new Fiat 500 and the like. Also some older prestige motors are doing much better than the average.

Also im wondering when the new 09 plates come out next month does that affect depreciation for that month more than others on say a recentish motors like an 08 plate car

Historically that has always been the case. However, many manufacturers and traders are having such a hard time shifting metal that, if you have the cash, you can get massive percentages off the cost of a new car as long as you are willing to haggle and even pit one dealer's price against others on like-for-like cars!
I've heard of some dealers so desperate to clinch a deal that they will even BOGOF some cars, albeit the 'free' one being a few years old
Another point I forgot earlier: Unless you are very au fait with car mechanics and know what to look out for, try to take an experienced car mechanic along with you when you are ready to buy at auction to vet the car as thoroughly as possible. All too many cars may seem fine on the surface, but hide hard use and poor servicing under the skin. Some sellers are all too willing to spend £100 on a thorough valet when the car needs £1000 spending on it to make it as good as it looks!
As ever, the important bye (buy?) words are: Caveat Emptor ;)
