Hi lads, great info on here, I need to ask about BCA's CAP prices, I am looking to buy a 2004 onwards mk5 GT TDI 140 BHP. I have got some cars that I want to go and pos buy.

The BCA customer care have given me the CAP prices for the cars that I am interested in, can somebody tell me in "general" do the cars reach their CAP prices?

here are my examples of cars I may go and see

    05 PLATE GT TDI 140 91k, CAP £5500

    05 PLATE GT TDI 140 65k, CAP £6325

    55 PLATE GT TDI 140 60k, CAP £6650

I have been to my local auction today and similar cars + spec have gone for much less, what i dont want to do is go miles dawwn south and for these cars to exceed these CAPS, ANY help is greeted !

    cheers
    DB

Erm... todays auction, was it Paddock Wood? Didn't happen to see a certain Grey Golf Plus did you? Let me know if you did :)

As for the CAP price, as far as I know its meant as a guide to what the car is worth at auction. The reserve is normally set below the CAP figure. Its difficult to say how much they go for, but it tends to be the auctions with lots of private buyers where cars exceed CAP regularly.
  • no it wasnt, but I have been there though years ago !

    cheers for the info

There never any gaurantees, but "in general" they appear to be selling £500 below CAP Cln. Your prices are all CAP cln quotes, but there appears to be a little bit of confusion, some of those prices are closer to the 3 door price some are the 5 door price.

Most of the prices showing indicate a £500 ish below CAP Cln but there are a few showing 200 or 300 below

There are no exact avg sold prices to match your mileages, so here are a few of the closest matches

    5 Door, 05, Avg:£5406 78K, CAP Cln £6,000...............diff £600
    3 door, 05, Avg:£5771 59K, CAP Cln approx £6,000.......diff £230
    5 door, 55, Avg £5913 70K, CAP Cln £6475..............diff £550

    Thx for the update.

The Cln price for that lot is £3025 I would have expected it to go for close to that amount in the first instance. But after looking at the average column for that lot there is a £3080 average on an average 75K. Taking this into account and the extra 25K in miles (101K) I would have expected it to be a few hundred below 3 grand.

The sale price of 2,400 would therefore seem to me to be about right, and if anything slightly cheap.

It can either be 2000 - 2005 Mondeo or the later model 2005 - 2006
The only early model 2005 '55 plate I found on wisebuyers
was the 115 bhp "Eu4" spec
    Private Good:£3,078
    Trade:£2,731

The price if it was a later model still 2005 '55
    Private Good:£2,998
    Trade:£2,661

So you can see they are both very similar anyway and both very similar to the lot's stated CAP cln price of £3025 - I have found before that the CAP cln is very similar to the Private Good price on Wise buyers, and that the "trade" on wisebuyers is usually lower than the auction bid price. In this example as I said after looking at the avg on the search you can work out they are selling below Cln, that's why the bid price was in this example closer to the 'trade' on wisebuyers.

In future you can expect these cars to go between 500 - 800 below its CAP cln price.
For example VE05HZY onsale on the 8th Jan will probably sell for £3,400 - £3,500

I advise if you can find a vehicle on autotrader that is priced at the max £300 above it's wisebuyers 'trade' price that you should consider it seriously. You would have to pay an additional £325 ish at auction anyway IYSWIM.

Thanks for all the infor Wig - Makes more sense to me now

I am swinging more towards a Ghia than a Zetec and will take my time until I come across a good deal. Thanks to all the infor you've provided I am no longer a novice and more wiser on exactly what I am after and how much to pay for it.

I will go again on 13th to Walsall BCA track the black Ghia - will keep you posted
    Once again Thanks a lot

    Hi
I know this has probably been posted before but this is a big thread now, can anyone of you kind people with the knowledge post a type of 'toolkit' of the following or point to link if its already been posted:
    1. The best website that gives an accurate free valuation of cars (and if possible clean price) ie wisebuyers etc
    2. What the current market is like ie whether I should be looking at trade price higher or lower or clean price at auctions
    3. When is the best time of year to go to auction as I am looking to buy in the next few months. Is it worth waiting till after the next reg?
    4. Maybe a few of the terms like warranted mileage etc.
I live in Liverpool so Belle Vue and Preston are ok but does anyone know of good auction houses locally that have cars upto 4 years old?

    Thanks in advance.:D
