switching from BT to Sky maybe ?

I am currently with BT for my broadband and phone
i pay £17.99 line rental going up to £18.99 in July
£29.90 for infinity 2 for broadband which is going up to £32.50 in July
When calling up to see if they could lower the price they have offered me:
no change on line rental
Reduced to £26.50 for infinity 2
or Infinity 1
£20 per month for 24 month contract
£22.00 per month for 12 month contract
So i phoned sky who offers me
Line rental £17.40 per month
standard broadband £10 per month for 12 months. £20 thereafter
Connection fee £35
or
line rental £17.40 per month
Pro broadband at £30.00 per month for 12 months
connection fee £50
so it seems sky are only cheaper on the standard option but I'm worried that its going to be a lot slower than my bt infinity 2
Sky are saying the speed will be the same as they use BT lines ?
just not sure what to do
I'm happy with Bt and their service but wanting to reduce costs as much as possible
Thanks for any advice

Isn't infinity 1 now upto 52Mb, so depending on what you currently get out of infinity 2 , moving from 2 to 1 may not impact too much on download speed (although upload isn't as good)
If Sky say the speed will be the same with them , it's comparing their fibre pro with infinity 2, not ordinary ADSL2+, check with your phone number or postcode what the likely speed with ADSL will be, as it's the distance from the exchange that dictates what speed you get with ADSL, it may say upto 17Mb, but deliver a lot less if you are a long way from the exchange, I'm guessing but I doubt many would go back to ordinary broadband after having FTTC broadband
It doesn't save a huge amount , but you can get the equivalent of 10% off a years line rental by paying a year up front with LRS (line rental saver)0 -
52 meg from 3rd July 2016.
Contracts end in July then that's the time to leave and BT may give you an offer .
Or if you have had the price rise email you have 30 days to cancel . You may also have an offer in the email .0 -
I'm currently on BT Infinity 1 having dropped from Infinty 2 when I renewed my contract a couple of months ago. No real noticeable difference in speed loss, just a reduction in cost. Currently paying £37.85 a month (will rise to £39.85 in July) line rental and broadband.
However, I'm now considering switching again to Sky due to BT's impending price increase. By going for their equivalent unlimited 38Mb fibre broadband deal, I'll only be saving £9 a month due to their connection fee. But, if I drop down to the 17 Mb unlimited deal I could save myself £22 a month.
What I need to know is whether the difference in speed will significantly impact on my broadband experience? I use a lot of online streaming via Netflix, NowTV, AP etc plus the occasional online gaming.
Would all these still work properly on 17Mb (I usually get top speeds as I live close to exchange and recently had new phone line installed) as I've only ever accessed them via super fast fibre broadband.0 -

Those figures look quite pricey to me.
I pay £27.70pm on a haggled 18-month contract with Talktalk.
That gets me Unlimited 38Mbps fibre broadband, line rental and free landline calls.
If you are concerned about TT customer service (I don't have a problem with them) then you could also look at Plusnet.0 -

I used to get top speed ADSL2+ before I switched to fibre a little over a year ago so not expecting it to be a lower speed now, especially as I've since had a new line installed so all new wiring etc.0 -

I moved away from TT (previously Primus) to join BT a little over a year ago :rotfl:0 -
If BT are putting their line rental up, you can assume Sky will do so soon otherwise they'll be making a loss. BT actually charge Sky the line rental also, so if Sky is cheaper than BT, it must soon be going up or Sky are making a loss - which isn't viable.
You don't want to move to Sky, get stuck in a new contract, and end up seeing the prices go up anyway at the end of the year / next year.0 -

This simply isn't true. Openreach charge BT Consumer, Sky, Talk Talk etc the same wholesale prices for lines, and these charges have remained fairly static (and in some places they've dropped) over the last few years.
BT Consumer have increased their line rental to increase revenue/profit - possibly to cover BT Sport costs if you believe some people, and quite possibly due to the year-on-year increase in demand for data.
Sky and Talk Talk will no doubt increase their charges, and if previous increases are anything to go by they will undercut BT. But they won't be doing it because Openreach have increased the cost of wholesaling.0 -
