Buying a fancy car

if I won a £million tomorrow, a fancy car would be the last thing on my mind. I do like to look at car, can appreciate a new Audi or BMW but had no real desire to own one. My "dream" car was a Ford Focus. However, one time I drove my friends car. He had a Golf we a stupidly large engine like a 3.8 or 4ltr. I put my foot down on the motorway and I could feel my back go into the chair and it us an experience that I am looking to have again.

Back on topic, I currently drive a Fiesta. I have had my eye on the new Mustang ever since they announced it. It looks amazing and I would think I would get there back in the chair feeling again as well. Funny thing is, my new job requires me to drive a lot, especially on motorways and ironically this has put me off buying a Mustang and caring about having a faster car.

Reason is, admittedly in my Fiesta I average 85-90MPH on the motorway and no matter what car I have, I would be driving no faster unless I wanted to get points on my licence. The Mustang would be more expensive to insure, I will have to worry about parking it at home as we have no drive and parking it in general as it's a much longer car will be a pain. Essentially, it feels like what I would be buying would be the aesthetics and the initial acceleration but I am still going to be getting to places at the same time.

Just wanted to know if anyone here has upgraded from a fairly modest car and felt if it was worthwhile. Or even the opposite

    Cant really answer the question.

Just to say though, the biggest engine put in a Golf for public sale was the 3.2 litre in the R32. Very fast car! I prefer the Mk4 to the Mk5.

I wouldn't buy a "nice car" for every day driving....... But then to me most cars are nothing more than glorified shopping trolleys. At 20 I went from a 1100cc Pug 106 (0-60 in 3 years), to a 1700cc race engined kitcar (0-60 in 5s), I very soon bought myself an every day run-around, which has been replaced several times, but I still own the kitcar.

    Why?

Firstly you're driving way above the speed limit which is in itself stupid. Maybe you'll be more likely to get caught if you're doing that in a mustang.

Secondly, you are most certainly wasting a heck of a lot of fuel.

i see a a big drop in cruising mpg just from edging up from say 65ish to 70. So by the time you're up to 85-90 you'll be using a lot of extra fuel.

You lost me at 'fancy car'.

    Haven't a clue what you're talking about.

And as for the new Mustang - well it bears no resemblance to a 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 390 Fastback which is the connection that the Ford marketing team want you to make. :rotfl:

Although a bit of a petrol-head, I consciously haven't upgraded to a fancy car. I have other aims in my life and fancy cars depreciate too quickly.

I had a Corrado VR6 for 12 wonderful months when I was much younger, but these days I would go for something like an Octavia VRs. Much cheaper to run and insurance and much more practical. Fast when you want it but not obviously fancy.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I had a metallic blue Corrado VR6, lovely car to drive, but mine was a nightmare in the summer with a black interior, heat soak from the engine and no air conditioning. I still check the prices of the Corrado Storm on Autotrader occasionally, but then remember the repair bills:sad:

For the OP, why a Mustang, plenty of fast hot hatches around that will leave it standing in a straight line and especially around the bends.

For what it's worth I experienced a big step change in car ownership in 1962 when I moved from the UK to California, selling my 1932 Standard Little 9 (1 litre, 20 bhp) and buying a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 which had the Thunderbird Special 5 litre V8 with 240 bhp. As the whole driving environment changed at the same time It was difficult to compare things.

I went from the Corrado VR6 to a Peugeot 107 and to be honest, in terms of fun, the 107 is surprisingly engaging as you can have fun at modest speed, whereas in order to feel the limits on the Corrado, you would have to be going at a silly speed. In the Corrado I had a bit of a 'moment' when following a friend in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI when I almost lost it going around a fast bend. That would have ended very badly. No such problems in the 107, it rarely touches 70.
