There are ultrasonic devices available fairly cheaply said to deter animals but burying orange peel just under the soil is supposedly a kinder way to do so

I would add that gravel is a bad idea - cats love using gravel as a toilet, much more so than grass :)

My cat poops on my grass when she sniffs a scent trail - we have a rural garden with loads of wildlife living here so it's foxes, rabbits, badgers, the lot. I've seen her sniffing along the grass in a trail and she poops when she's been sniffing a while. It must be territorial as there's plenty of better places for her to do it, including a litter tray!

I've had lots of trouble with cats pooing in the boarders. I cut up pieces of chicken wire and Placed on the ground. I've had no problems since.

The ultrasonic cat scarers work to some degree. Battery powered and with an IR movement sensor, let off a burst of high pitch noise to deter the cats.

They're not that expensive so worth a try.

Then there's various scented granules and gels you can get, seem to be either garlic or citrus.

We have this question every year.

Most ideas, other than a good quality ultrasonic deterrent and/or physical barriers, just don't work.

A third method is to create an area for the cats to 'go' in. In my old garden, my moggies used the friable soil under our privet hedges in preference to anywhere else,. Now, I find the place where I empty the ash pan is very popular, though not infallible.

And if you think cats are bad, just be grateful if you don't have foxes and badgers too, particularly the latter!
  • Though not all cats leave their "calling cards" nearby.....so it may not come to pass that neighbourhood cats do this...

A friend of mine has recently re-homed a cat and is thoroughly amused at the fact that the cat will walk round her garden with her and then come indoors and scrupulously use its litter tray instead of attempting to go in her garden.:rotfl:

I "think" the local neighbourhood moggies here have got it worked out that I will head straight towards them any time I spot them anywhere near my garden - which they react to by skedaddling on the spot as fast as their little legs will carry them. I wouldnt harm them obviously (and am much more prone to telling my visitors to watch out in case one of them is having a snooze near their vehicle). The cats dont know that though - they just know "See Money in her garden = run" and I'd be quite prepared to spray them with water from my hosepipe - but they dont know thats as far as it goes:rotfl:

Are you sure it's cats ? Cats don't usually just poo on the lawn, they're usually pretty fussy about burying it. Sure it's not foxes ?

    Cats use lawns regularly

I'm trying to keep the cats out in order to be able to put up a bird feeder without feeding the local moggies.

I've got spiky prickle strips around the walls, the electronic cat/pest deterrents, lavender plants and they mostly stay away.

    Mostly.

Every now and again, I find a little heap of stinking bark mulch and a collection of flies buzzing round it with no obvious clue as to how the cat got in.

It must be jumping up onto the fence post (the part unprotected by spikes).

I clean it out (bark and all), tidy up and add curry powder or chilli and it stops for a while (3-6 weeks) and then there's another calling card.

    It's infuriating!!
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Its a bloody old wives tale that getting dogs work, they seem to enjoy winding them up on a daily basis!
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
