South Wales so M4 is the only realistic option

    From where?

You may not have noticed that the A4 still exists.

If you're heading out of London itself, then use the A3 or the A4, then A30, then cut across to the A4 and miss Slough/Maidenhead out. Or cut up a bit later to miss Reading out.

Or miss out the Thames Valley completely by heading gently north - Cotswolds then Gloucester.

£1.99 on an AA Atlas down the petrol station will open a world of alternatives to you...

Terribly sorry trying to save you time, money and blood pressure, based on my own experiences of moving quite a few cars - including non-runners - from the home counties to (damn near) Wales.

Guess I must be on the wrong site...

I'm originally from S Wales and travelled there regularly from London varied journey by going M4 or Gloucester Forest of Dean route then onwards. You won't need both cars on same day so drive one car to convenient area for Mega bus or Nation Express then use other car for onward journey returning by coach when convenient. Depending on where you are going to live wife might well need to build up confidence as most major A roads being upgraded to dual carriageways and as busy as most motorways.

A few years ago when I was moving a long distance I had a similar problem (no partner, but I owned 2 cars), anyway I was planning on driving 1 car from Essex to the North of Scotland, then flying back and driving the other one up. I mentioned this to my removal team and one of them offered to drive the other one himself for free - he said he would prefer it to being cramped in the pantechnicon with the other lads. Quick call to my insurer and all was sorted.

Could the removal company hook a vehicle trailer to the back of the removal wagon?

That's a good shout - the removal company presumably has more than 1 crew member, see if one of them will drive the car for you, since they are going that way anyway and they'll probably prefer it to being stuck in the cab.
