Here we go again - another death on a closed road race circuit http://www.u.tv/Sport/2016/05/14/NW200---Rider-involved-in-fatal-crash-named-58961
However tragic, these guys need to be saved from themselves and forced onto safer track events. The assembly needs to put an end to road closure orders for this purpose despite the money spinning nature of these events.

Sorry you have never seen the Isle of Man road course? No, you cannot force them to race on tracks, they know the risks and do not want to track race.

Sorry the poor man died and others have been injured. But these guys live for this kind of racing which goes on all over the world. They are not children but adults its their choice and their sponsors.

It doesn't. It takes place in very few countries.

I would think if it was banned it would just continue "underground" as they said about boxing if it were to be banned.Dangerous sports have been going on since man threw the first stone in competition, however in organised venues there are at least proper safety measures taken (as far as is possible) and medical help available at once.

Can anyone not see the irony of the DRD,on the one hand, licencing events such as the North West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix, which promote reckless speed and on the other hand, putting on lurid advertisements on tv condemning those marginally over the speed limit?
I wish someone from DRD would explain this dichotomy.
As an occasional visitor to the North West 200 and a regular viewer on television, I would now call on the Assembly to ban road-racing.
One only has to use google to determine the numbers killed on the roads here. It is horrific.

There have been 833 people killed on our roads in the last 10 years alone. Many of whom had little or no say in their demise. Over the same period in road racing there have been eight fatalities here in NI according to wiki.

Therefore, should we ban private vehicles and make everyone use public transport? I'm also pretty sure that road fatalities outnumbered deaths due to the troubles in all but one of the years. Makes it more compelling.

How many have been killed during equestrian events during a similar period? What about watersports? Maybe we should ban alcohol too? To use continue your point - horse-riders, people who use boats, people who drink alcohol are people who "need to be saved from themselves". And all this before we even start talking about the extreme sports.

If you are talking about protecting lifes, then go for the low hanging fruit first. There are plenty of people dying on the roads or in their homes who have no say or control in their demise. Road racers know the risks. Spectators know the risk of watching from close proximity. It's a risk - an accepted risk that organisers are continually trying to minimise. There is always a knee-jerk reaction after one of these accidents - usually from people who are outside the sport.

We could make a massive difference to the lifes of so many people in this country by banning alcohol. Even those who don't drink would benefit from the resultant decrease of stress on the NHS. Why don't we do it? - because too many people drink alcohol. But, lets ban road racing because it's just a minority! If you want to save lifes do it where you can make maximum difference. Banning road racing will not make any difference. Without the release mechanism of road racing, these guys will either speed on open public roads or go to another sport with equivalent risks to get their buzz.
