I have three BoS accounts. Why did they refuse you more? Just log in online...and apply for two more each if required...no need to call in.

Energy Saving Champion I've been Money Tipped!
I've just opened a Tesco current account after seeing this post - we have two BoS accounts, both single as they wouldn't allow me a second account even if joint. I might just empty my husbands into the Tesco account, he only has £3k as I'm juggling his accounts to keep interest under the £500 PSA amount, whereas I currently don't earn at all. I'm trying to set up the Tesco savers accounts mentioned above but am getting an error message - does the current account have to be set up to apply for the savers?

What error message do you get?
Have you had aTesco savings account in the past?

When I tried recently to open a savings account on line I put my personal details in, then got a message"Oops there has been a mistake , please contact us"
On telephoning them I found that I had a dormant account with them from years ago,new accounts were then set up over telephone,no requirement to have a current account with them.
  • I've never had any Tesco banking accounts. The current account was set up fine, just waiting on the card etc, but no luck applying for the savers. Maybe I'll try tomorrow.

BoS refused my second account and would return an error if added to husband's application to make it joint. But I'm not employed so am not that surprised, I'm planning to return to work soon, when my youngest starts school, perhaps it will accept it once I have an income of my own.

The Tesco on line site has been somewhat shaky recently - I suspect that they are being inundated with applications and with existing account holders setting up multiple direct debits.

That said, there have been good reports of their telephone service, so it might be easiest to give them a ring?

Did you enter linked account details into the application form? In my experience, not doing so flags up that error message. They use them to help electronically ID you. If the account details you enter aren't yet reported to Experian (e.g. from a recently opened account) then it will flag up further checks required; you'll then get an automated letter through the post asking for certified ID etc. but they seem to then send out an outright decline letter a couple of days later for some people, probably as they've had a nosy into their credit report in a further check on ID and not liked what they've seen...

There is an issue with applying online for a second and third bos vantage account.

I have three, first went through fine online, second was refused. I then rang and got my second and third over the phone, it just seems a fairly standard default they operate, though others seem to have gone straight through online.

For the Tesco savers I applied via my account after logging on so the application had my details already. It seems like a website issue.

On the BoS matter, I applied for a second vantage account and was declined and offered a standard account. We still have some options for other accounts so I'm not too bothered, especially with the new DD requirement. And we're planning to spend several £k on home improvements in the coming months.

...to which, if 'Classic', you could have added Vantage almost as soon as it was up and running. Unless by "standard" you meant a 'Basic' bank account?

I promise I'm not stupid, I successfully set up one account and the second was declined and the bottom level account was offered, it is not upgradable - I tried more recently as it worked on a Nationwide account. I understand why they don't want someone who has no income to open three higher level bank accounts. On the other hand, I've been accepted for two credit cards today so these decisions aren't always logical. I can retry once I get earning again and actually need the extra bank accounts, I still have a 123 account with £8k left to fill and a new Tesco account.
