i've just switched to octopus, took 21days, already got a smart meter and confirmed on supply now. I have an EV so want to switch from standard variable to Go.If I phone, do you think there's any chance i'd get a 21.30 or even 22.30 slot? A gal has to put the tumble dryer on 3 or 4 times a year, not keen to run it while asleep...

It would appear from earlier posts that there is currently availability for the 21:30 slot.

Keep in mind you are asking to transfer to 'Go Faster' not just 'Go'...

  • Worth bearing in mind that once you agree a time slot on Go your price in that slot is fixed for 12mths.

I think it's something that Octopus could look at as people's circumstance Change it would be good if you could switch between time slots say once a quarter / 6 months, but what happens is that if you change time slot you basically start another 12mths and move to the rate at that time.

They are hedging the use to match the time-slots, so it is better for them if people stay in the slot they start in for the full 12 months, but with no exit fees you can still move, perhaps not at the same price if things have gone up...

These are tariffs which are being used to balance demand with supply. For example, Octopus has had to withdraw the slot starting at 20.30 for Go Faster customers because of demand. Whilst it might suit consumers to have some flexibility, my guess is that it would cause Octopus endless problems managing their costs. It has been reported that Octopus makes a loss on its Go/ Go Faster tariffs.

A question for those of you on variable direct debit: how does this work in practice? Does it take whatever is needed to zero your account balance each month, or does it take the value of energy used each month, maintaining your credit balance if you have one?
It looks like they are making it increasingly difficult to skip payments when you have built up credit, perhaps in response to those struggling to pay for what they use.

It appears to take the full outstanding balance at the time that the statement was generated. If you then win on the wheel of fortune it doesn’t reduce the DD accordingly.

If more charges are raised, and there’s time, they’ll increase the DD, otherwise schedule another one.
