My wife has a 2 year old corsa from Arnold Clark
she took out service deal with it
Just had service and they said it needed new pads & discs on front price £270
She called Kerr & Smith they quoted 255
took car to Kerr & Smith they checked it and said pads and discs were fine
What a bunch of con men A C are

It's happened before and it'll happen again.
It'll happen with other garages too.
Kerr & Smith probably did the same to someone else in the past.
It's nice weather. Go and get an ice cream and chill out.0 -

to be fair, there is a grey area for pads and discs.
Some people will say pads are OK until about 2-3mm, but the guidelines say pads should be recommended for repair if they wont last until the next annual inspection.0 -

Who's to say 2-3mm of pad won't last until the next 'annual inspection' though? Or the one after that?0 -

The next annual inspection will be 1 year or another 20k on a Corsa. With these long intervals garages are erring on the side of caution. On the one hand you're accused of ripping them off, on the other the pads/discs may not last and you get a complaint. The man without a signature.0 -

I wouldn't leave pads with 2-3mm on any car that I or my family would drive in, and certainly wouldn't consider them fine till the next service.
Manufacturers recommendations of when to change pads may surprise some people they err very much on the side of caution.
Rear pad warning on an XJ Jag for example will come on at around 15/16k in my experience, in my experience you can also ignore it for 10k miles and still have a good 3/4mm left on the pads.
But that is beside the point, in the OP's case the Garage concerned as certainly recommending changing them extremely early.
But therein lies the rub. Are they lying or erring on the side of caution?
That is the get out of jail free card they will play.0 -
Pads maybe but new discs on a 2 year old car??? Unless it's done stellar mileage there shouldn't be a problem with the discs.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0

I have a service plan with AC, if they tell me I need stuff doing I take it elsewhere to get done, simples.....0

A lot of Garages/Repair centres pay their staff a commission on all the extra work they generate.
Ask around and see if can find a local man on recommendation !I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
