Your friend was doing you a favour. It wasn't his fault that the roof fell in.
If you valued the sofa you would have wrapped it to protect it. A garage isn't an ideal place to store valuable items. You should have paid for insured protected and safe storage.

Way back in the 1980s a friend moved out of town and wanted to store some boxes in our garage for a couple of weeks while they settled into the new home.

A couple of weeks turned into longer, and I didn't have the phone number of the new house. Those were the days before everyone had a mobile.

We had to park on the road as we didn't have use of our garage. I thought, and still think, that she was taking the pee.

That individual was a user - I sometimes looked after her kids and one day she let me down when I was due to sit an exam and she had agreed to look after mine. Suffice to say we didn't keep in touch for long after the move.

No, your friend should definitely not have to compensate for the sofa. It wouldn't have been in a great state anyway if it had been in uncontrolled storage for that long.
  • We ended up storing someone's three piece suite in our garage for over two years. Despite being asked repeatedly, they wouldn't take it back. Even offered to pay transport costs. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there was no problem with garage roof - just someone fed up of being taken advantage of.

I don't feel the need to post on this forum much, because of the normally ridiculous questions...however the replies to this 'dilemma' flabbergast me.

Firstly, no one yet has seriously questioned if this 'friend' REALLY DID store the sofa in his garage and didn't just sell it on? It sounds majorly shifty to me.

Secondly, it is BANG out of order to shift the sofa without the friend's consent. He should have texted or rang, said, sorry mate and shown him what happened. How hard is it to take a picture and ask the owner's advice? Of course, at this stage, the owner of the garage isn't at fault. Both are just unlucky.

Thirdly, he sounded a good mate storing the sofa in his garage. It's a nice deed. Or so it seems. However, if the garage is half empty, it really isn't like he's rescued a family member from close death. I don't quite understand why people seem to think he's some kind of hero or something...

By the way, I stored one of my sofa's in my grandparent's garage for TWO YEARS. I wouldn't expect it to be in mint condition when I got it back, but it was absolutely fine. There was plenty of space so it was no problem for them (although I did thank them).

Second hand sofas are never worth much, unless they are a classic leather from, say, Laura Ashley or Parker Knoll etc. I would imagine your friend could have claimed from their insurance, but it could affect their no claims. How did you ever imagine a garage a good place to store furniture? Most of them are grubby places full of spiders! You need to let it go ...........

Were you planning on 'upsizing' again in the near future?!

Strange thread. Why would you keep it and not flog it if you'd downsized. If it wasn't worth flogging, it really wasn't worth keeping. People are very precious about their garage space. What a PITA having a sofa in there for a year.

I would have told you to move it on rather than dispose of it or sell it or if indeed the ceiling did fall in on it, but, if that really was the case, you really can't expect him to use his insurance to claim/increase his premiums. If it's a separate garage, it may not have insurance anyway.

    Move on...

  • Have you seen much of this friend over the last year?

Did you check the garage before putting your sofa there - was it in a state as garage roofs don't normally fall in.

Do you think your friend is lying?

Have you seen his garage since he said the roof fell in?

    What value was your sofa?

Did you offer any form of payment to him or anything at all for him storing your sofa for so long?

More info needed but I think you need to talk about this and why your friend didn't tell you at the time the roof fell in, seems a bit strange to me that your friend didn't mention what happened until it came up in conversation - that's not how a true friend behaves but then maybe you are both very casual and very laid back?!

So he didn't tell you at the time about the ceiling caving in, your sofa being ruined and eventually being thrown away? How bizarre!! I don't trust him. Sounds like he sold it on Ebay. Just forget about it and next time use a proper storage facility.
