About a year ago I downsized and didn't have space for all my funiture, so a friend kindly agreed to store a sofa in his garage for me. Recently it came up in conversation and he casually mentioned that it'd been damaged when the ceiling collapsed and threw it away. Now he changes the subject whenever I talk about it.

    Where's the dilemma?

dilemma - a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially ones that are equally undesirable.

No choices listed on the original post. Unclear whether the person wants the sofa back or not, is miffed that they weren't consulted or not.

Are they taken from MSE? It might be better to try and find the original thread :rotfl:

I think youve got a cheek dumping your furniture on him for a whole year.

I think you should buy him a drink, apologise for dumping your stuff on him clogging up space in his garage and thank him for getting rid of it.

I mean, if you didn't need it within a year would you realistically have ever asked for it back? It's not like you asked him to look after it for a short while you moved house. With what you've saved on storage fees you could probably buy a pretty decent brand new sofa now.

Of course, if this were a 'real' thread we'd then get drip fed info about how it was a one off hand crafted piece that's been in the family for 200 years, and the friend is a billionaire who's 'garage' is an out building bigger than most houses with a roof that shouldn't have fallen in for a few more decades, but MSE never comes back to their MMDs.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

We have a number of problems here.
    1. Why did the sofa owner not mention his sofa for one year?
    2. Why not until now did his friend mention sofa?

    3. If the garage roof collapsed he would have claimed off insurance and included any other stuff damaged. e.g. the sofa.

Therefore I cannot answer the question.
    Or perhaps I can.

    He is not a friend.

You should pay him for his damaged roof. Your sofa would have been in his wsy when he got his roof mended.

Also garages are about £50 a month to rent so you owe him £600. And the cost to get the sofa removed.

I have never heard of a garage roof spontaneously collapsing. I think it is strange you only heard about it when you raised the matter. Did your friend put in an insurance claim? Ask more questions.

You said yourself in the title you discarded it (rather than stored it for future use) so you should offer to pay your ffriend a fair price for storage.

You have benefited from your friend storing the sofa for free but he never should have destroyed your property without your agreement. The sofa was not his to throw away even if it was damaged as there is no reason to suggest he could not contact you to ask what to do about it.

It would be best to try to resolve this with him as otherwise it will eat away at your relationship until its dealt with, my advice is to try and reach a compromised agreement with him as the last thing you want is for it to end up in court.

Forget about it and don't keep bringing it up or you will ruin your friendship and you won't be a penny better off.

You stored a sofa for free in a friend's garage for a year, which is taking the micky.
During this extended period something happened to the roof , quite possibly it leaked for a long time before collapsing, and the sofa was damaged and the friend disposed of it. I seriously doubt his garage roof was insured and even if it was what value do you think the insurance company would put on a second hand sofa that wasn't even his and had been left there for months ? I think he could, even should, have let you know before disposing of it and had it been me I would have called you, to give me a hand to take it up the tip and pay towards the petrol ! If you want secure insured storage you need to pay for it and I recon if you had used a self-store unit you would have made-up your mind pretty quickly about what to do with the spare sofa as you saw the rental money go out every month.
