Coping with past trauma? (sensitive topic)

    Online counselling sounds like a good idea but I've no idea where it might be available? I won't rule out talking therapies, but they haven't worked well for me so far. I'm paid at the end of the month (not much, but maybe enough to look into a counselling session or two). I think I am afraid of my own emotions, if that makes sense? I'm afraid of what might happen if I rake up things from the past.


    I have been doing some CBT for low self esteem, listening to a CD at home. That's given me some insights. It's a bit of a vicious circle, if low self esteem brings about negative situations and negative situations bring on or perpetuate low self esteem. But I don't want to over-think things.

    It makes complete sense and is a very normal feeling.

    It is likely that you will have some rough times which is why it's best if you can deal with things at a time of your own choosing, rather than let it overwhelm you when you've other issues to deal with.

    Some people feel the need to delve deeply into what happened to them in order to understand it fully; others are happy to find a therapy that teaches them to 'let go' without reliving everything.

    There are so many options available, don't feel you have to stick with one that doesn't suit you.

    As with many things in life - not having a lot of spare money does restrict your choices but the internet has a lot of forums and free courses - have a search around.

    Just a practical note here really: I echo Mojisola...therapeutic support can feel overwhelming when there is a lot going on. If/When you feel ready then google Counselling Directory, tap in where you live and look through the counsellor/therapist profiles that appeal to you. On the left you can see if they offer online, telephone, face-to-face sessions and they should specify if they offer low-cost therapy.
