  • but according to cubegame above, Questor's excess & LDW policy pretty much covers everything, no?

No it doesn't cover SLI. You need SLI in the USA for cars with no insurance.
  • ahhh the liability component, I forgot about that. Do no add on policies provide this part?

I've already showed you that they do. Do I need to repeat myself? :)
You are covered with AVIS UK anyway. So you don't need it.
Vintage car? forget about it or buy the insurance from the hirer if they offer a policy.

My situation is different, as I travel frequently and can hire a car locally, so an annual policy with SLI is suitable for me.
For you, hiring from AVIS UK for a car in California, waivers are usually included, other than for...what I wrote earlier. :)

I went with the latter, as they are a long established company.
  • Thanks Nifty, I actually replied to you before but the internet seems to have swallowed it. So basically no company will offer the full LDW & SLI for vintage cars. You've answered my query. I'll still take out a standard policy to cover myself for anything that the Avis one doesn't I guess. (if only they could all make things simple and affordable lol)

    Thanks once again.

Questor don't appear to offer any extra value for money. Insurance4carhire via Qudco offer better value for an annual policy.
  • I just heard back from the classic car rental company, I'd asked about their own LDW (which they didn't mention on their website). This was the reply.

Our LDW puts you on our insurance and provides the minimum California requirements. It also limits your liability on our car to $2500.00 maximum.

We then take a signed credit card slip for $2500.00 to hold as a deposit.

The cost is $50.00/day for a 1-3 day rental, $35.00/day for a 4-7 day rental and $25.00/day for anything longer than a 7 day rental.

So, not exactly cheap.. but I suppose if you're desperate to drive a '65 mustang around the coast for a couple days it's an option.

You still have the issue of not being covered by car hire excess insurance when driving a car more than 20 years old.
Perhaps better to get a more modern model. That's what I noted when in San Fran., some couple driving a more modern Mustang.

I'd been thinking that! As someone who was brought up driving cars of the fifties & sixties I think I'd rather have a modern motor.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
