Those makes mentioned, unless you buy a seriously well maintained from new example, and continue in the same vein, you will have reliability and wear problems, just like every other complicated car.
Those ''rubbish'' and ''cheap'' Kias on the other hand, with less than half as much electronic tat to go wrong will still, cockroach like, be going long after the expensive badges have been neglected and died in poverty street.
If you must have a badge then a Lexus of some sort is likely to be your best bet for reliability...ironically in Japan they don't really bother with the Lexus emblem (thats a western affectation for the image addicted), Toyota still badged right up to the flagship Century.0 -

Personally I would get a Jaguar or a Land Rover of some description, either a Disco or a Sport
Just to add a well maintained Nissan Pathfinder would be good value. But you would need to see if the camchain has been updated with the duplex chain and the gearbox cooler has been bypassed as they have a habit of leaking coolant into the gearbox fluid.
The cooler is not really needed in the UK climate unless you do a lot of towing, if you want you can fit an aftermarket cooler.0 -

i can get a 2009-10 70-80k on the clock for around 18k (x5)
i love x5 but expensive
what other cars do you consider that has the look and feeling of x5
please don't suggest anything french or korean or vaxhaul/ford.
all are crap in my view
Don't forget to budget for the new camchain or if you want to leave it a new engine for when it jumps a tooth.
The 520d you are seeing are cheap for a reason. They are also cramped in the back.0 -

A 10 car year old is only going to be reliable if the previous owner has taken care of it.0

Are X5 costly to maintain? It depends. My wife has a 40D 2012 model that finished its warranty last year. We stopped fitting the runflats last year, and most work is now done at a good indy. We had one of the suspension airbags go on the rear of the car and so rather than take it to BMW main dealer we got hold of some on Ebay and got our indy to fit them. Bearing in mind it's always best to change both if one has gone, BMW charge £700+VAT for each of them and to fit them would be hours of labour at main dealer rates.
If you get an X5 have a good relationship with a good reliable garage as you won't want to pay main dealer rates. Those low profile rear tyres are silly money especially if you by the reccommended runflats.
We had or windscreen washer pipe fail (a MOT failure on test) on the modern ones that involves taking the front bodywork of the car off. The part is relatively cheap, the labour eyewatering.
If you don't know a good local garage that can fix X5, steer clear would be my advice. If you must consider it, look at maintenance records, servicing etc.0 -
£700 + VAT for run flat from BMW? seriously why do people want these on their cars.
You could get a normal tyre delivered by a chauffer, fitted and a full body massage in the back of their limo for that kind of money!0 -
