using urine to feed the plants

I've been watching outrageous wasters on bbc3, and they have been using diluted urine to feed the plants.

I think this is a good idea- hubbie has offered to pee in a bucket and daughter uses a potty so we could be making the most of this resource but i have a few questions....
does anyone know how many parts water to urine you should use?
can you use it on edible plants?
should you limit how often you use it?

also heard you can put it in compost bin, but again do we dilute? and how often should we do it?

god if my friends knew i was posting this i think they would run a mile!!!:rotfl:

My husband wees directly into the compost bin at the bottom of the garden. If I catch sight of him from an upstairs window I can't pretend it isn't obvious what he's doing - I just hope the neighbours don't realise. I know it's ecologically great, but............

unfortunately people in developing countries use this urine method as pruning their goods, and yes this does include edible things such as celery, peppers, carrots etc

so we have been eating things without knowing what happened to them

  • There's nothing extraordinary in using urine for gardening. Diluted 20:1, it's very useful for feeding pot plants and the like. Of more immediate interest, urine is also used in composting to increase the nitrogen content of the mulch, accelerating the composting process and increasing its final nutrient values.

Whether it's socially acceptable is a personal matter.

From what I know it's male urine that's good to use, female urine can have too many hormones in to be useful in compost.

wow! is your husband very tall? or your compost bin very low? my hubbie would have to stand on a ladder to manage this, that would give the neighbours something to talk about!!!!!!!!:rotfl:

  • Various comments on this method of fertilising your garden have been expressed here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=535788 but not the "strength" or weakness to use. Now that I know the recipe, I can cancel my Phostrogen order.
