urine and grass

Bit of a strange one...

We have a patch on our lawn that has strangely grown loads compared to the rest of the lawn.

Last night my husband admitted to me that he had been weeing on it when he was desperate and he didn't want to disturb our toddler when he had just gone to bed.

It may just be coincidence, or does anyone know whether this actually improves your lawn?

On Tv the other evening was a programme about a family who were wasteful (TVs lights and computers left on, over use of cars etc.) so they had to live a more basic life for a few days. One of the things was using a toilet that was plumbed to the mains but went into large containers. At the end of the week these containers were emptied , they were simply tipped up over the vegetable patch to act as a fertilizer, due to the nitrogen in the urine.
    .....

  • Blimey - it costs a fortune to buy lawn fertiliser and all this time we could have just weed on it for free!

Nitrogen is in lawn feed, so if it's in urine too then I guess it makes sense.

I know that men's wee improves your compost. (only men's though apparantly!). I have threatened that my husband has to stay outside all night if I ever see him or his mates standing around the compost bin weeing though!

All wee help compost to rot.

And it is really the most sensible thing to encourage your hubbie to stop off at the compost bin on th way back from the pub or whereever he goes. You get better compost quicker and you save on potable water that would be wasted flushing the loo.

I have 5 composts and each has a family of slow worms, I think that if anyone peed on them it would kill them, I ended up with the 5 composts because every time I go to empty one I don't want to evict the worms so I start another one, am I daft or what.

  • Interesting thread!

Can I just ask for clarification on something from one of you Wee Experts - it's only MEN's wee that helps the lawn along, is that right?

I seem to recall as a child having a Yorkie Terrier !!!!! and then a dog and they both affected the lawn....but can't remember whether it was the !!!!!'s urine that helped or made bald patches!

Must look out for that programme that you were all talking about - about the family living wastefully. I'm pretty sure the contents of my hubby's bladder could be recycled in a public house without too much treatment:eek:

It's usually a b*tch's urine that damages a lawn rather than a dog. The damage is mainly caused by the close proximity to the grass. A dog tends to spray over a larger area so you get the fertilising effect without the damage.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
