Sold my 12yr old car privately. Buyer wants a refund. Any advice please?

Hi,

I sold my 12yr old car privately recently. I provided all the history of the work done in the car in receipts to the buyer.

He's having problems with the car and wants a refund.

What can I do?

The car passed it's MOT and was drivable when I sold it.

I don't know what to say to him politely and legally. Obviously I don't want the car back.

Any advice please?

Private sale, as long as you described the vehicle accurately, the buyer doesn't have a leg to stand on. Exactly how did you describe the vehicle when you advertised it for sale? What 'problems' has the buyer encountered with the vehicle??

I described it as a car I drove for 3 years and provided additional normal car details like engine size, doors etc.

The buyer encountered a problem with the car not starting which I thought was a battery issue but I replaced the battery before I sold it.

I suspect he's had some other problems.

It's not a perfect car, the car is that old so there may be wear and tears so when I sold it it was working.

I let the guy drive it.

He has all the records of work and parts replaced in the car under my ownership from my garage so I am not hiding anything.

What shall I say to them?

    Tell him to get stuffed.

Typical of the British public. Want's to pay less but still wants the added protection

So he drove the car when he bought it so was working.

As been said nothing he can do, well he can try.

Maybe hes a noob and thinks he has some comeback, has rights etc.

Tell him it was a private sale so buyer beware.

Hopefully nothing you knew about and didn't disclose.

Tell him politely not your problem and cease communication, it only encourages the window lickers of this world.

He says he has engine problems and electronics problems.

None which I was aware of.

I genuinely sold him a driveable car and told him that every year there has to be some work to do on it because it's not a perfect car.

So I said there is nothing I can do about this and sorry.

    Is this enough?

Essentially you're in the clear, but if he wants to take it to court it'll come down to whether the engine & electronics problems existed on the day you sold it to him.
