Aldi bread hike..

  • Hi,

mmm, with a 22/24 slice loaf, at a slice a day would last 3 weeks.

An 18 slice loaf would last, well, 18 days.

Which means going to Aldi more often, but then, if you walk, more exercise, burn off more calories.

Are there people who actually count the number of slices in a loaf of bread?

My Sister, a high earner, only buys toilet rolls with the most sheets!

Is your ruler from Aldi? (joke)

    A typical 800g loaf is 25-35cm long.

I do think it's a slight problem that so much of Aldi/Lidl bread is thick-sliced, with a consequent increase in calories per slice.

I cannot fault the VFM of the "posh" wrapped loaves in both A & L at 85p on a long-term price reduction. Similar loaves are c. £1.30 in the major supermarkets.

I think I was reading the inches side of the ruler :rotfl: daytona0 you wally!

Is it possible that the loaves are thicker sliced because the bread is weak?
I normally bake bread but last week bought a medium sliced waitrose white loaf in a service station on the M25.
It was like candy floss and my husband's sandwiches just fell apart, I suspect that if the slices had been thicker the sandwiches would have survived. I think the problem is that the bread is made quickly and isn't strong enough as a result.

The basic wholemeal loaf has a new wrapper, and is still 800g, but the slices are bigger, and much thicker ('doorsteps'), so there's only 18 rather than the typical 22-24.
A sneaky way of an effective price hike..(not for the first time)
I'll be going back to Lidl, next time..

What are you going to do when lidl notice and do the same?

    Disappointing thread.

From the title I expected something about a long walk which ended with a nice loaf of Aldi's finest 22 slices. Or 18.

I'm not sure why people seem to be taking the p out of OP. If they're used to budgeting x number of loaves based on the number of slices in the loaf, then they're going to be left either with buying the same amount and going with out, or buying more and being left with an excess.

Basically their cost per person per meal will have increased, however little that might seem, for those over on the O/S board feeding one person on £5 a week it can be a massive difference.

Well I don't know what job you do or if you're on benefits. If this is you're feeling then asking whoever's paying you to pay you less so your employer doesn't have then have same problem. If you're on benefits do the same, actively claim less money to save the tax payer money.

Or they could simply cut the thicker slices into halves or quarters and instead of using 2 full slices for a sandwich or 1 full slice for toast etc, use the occasional 1/2 or 1/4 slice instead.

Irrespective of the number of slices, they are paying the same amount of money for the same amount of bread so there is not as the OP claimed "an effective price hike".
