I am thinking of upgrading to W10 while it is still free.

If follow the download procedure using the W10 icon on my system bar can someone please tell me how I burn a startup W10 disc in case in the future I have to reformat and the computer reverts to W7 and I then would have to pay after July.

If you have W7, then W10 isn't an upgrade, best to stick with what you have IMHO
If you have W8, then move on to W10 ....

assuming you have a product key i would take this opportunity to tidy up your system. i would download win 10 onto a usb and do a fresh install. when you have re-installed everything take a system image as backup.

makes no sense to go backwards once you have win 10 up and running

Take a full image *before* you try the Win 10 upgrade. (I'd use Macrium Reflect Free but other methods are available.)
Then you have a good way back if something goes wrong.

I have only just got round to downloading the Media Creation tool.

However on clicking it just appears to want to upgrade to Win 10.

    Is this correct?

When you run the media creation tool select Create installation media for another PC.

Did you do a full image of your current C:drive?

Yes it is - Win 7 / 8 / 8.1 are all upgradable to Win 10 for free - it depends on whether you want Win 10 though !!

I'm guessing J B was saying that its not worth upgrading from W7 to W10 (rather than its not free). For small office/home users the only real benefit is the longer in-support period for W10, and even then you might be paying for it AFTER that.

My experience has been positive with upgrades I've seen/done. But you need to invest a bit of time and effort and many people are saying "why bother if I have something that works." Which is a strong argument.

I've upgraded from both 7 and 8.1 on different computers, and in both cases I've had no significant issues and many things are better (although to be fair that applies more to the 8.1 system). I certainly wouldn't bother to go back having done it.
