Sending phone to Smart TV

Explanations of how this works all say "just hit the CAST button on the app. you are on". Have just looked on Iplayer and cannot find one.
Not all apps / players are chromecast enabled .

OK we're attempting 2 things here so let's keep them separate.
castle 96 simply wants to see what's on his phone, on his TV.
He tells us that his Samsung Galaxy J5 doesn't support casting, but his TV does.
His phone DOES support MHL, so I advised trying an MHL lead.
He has bought a very long MHL lead, and it needs power. It should work though. It plugs into USB - and yes, your phone's charger would be a good idea to use to get us started.
Does anyone have any experience of how to make MHL work? Is it just plug and play?
ALSO, we're still talking about casting. He doesn't have a Chromecast. It looks like he's managed to cast Youtube to his TV, presumably using Miracast or whatever Samsung's brand name is for it.
We can have a look at trying to enable other stuff too.
Let's go back to what you're trying to acheive, do you literally just want to see your phone on your TV, do you have videos on your phone you want to view that Smartview doesn't work with?0 -

If the TV has a youtube app built in, it'll connect to that and allow them to send videos from phone to be played on the youtube app on the TV.0 -
thanks for your help folks
Using smartview on phone, I can see on TV, photos/phone videos/music. OK with that.
Phone sends (casts) Youtube to TV. (If phone casts youtube, I dont see why it doesnt cast everything...but OK.
The lead I have needs power. My phone chargeris just a plug,, not an adapter. SURELY, I cannot plug that into the MHL lead to 'power' it. I NEEDS ? an adapter.
Willing to bin the lead and get a £30 Chromecast from Argos - this should !? do all I want ??0 -
Using the lead I bought, I have plugged the HDMI end into the TV slot/HDMI that the Xbox normally uses (so I know that slot is OK).
Other end of the lead into phone.
Connected new lead (into the HDMI), to USB slot on TV. There are 2 - 5V/0.5A and HDD 5V/1A. I have used my phone charger lead to connect the new lead to the USB. The USB should 'power' the lead - yes ??
"No signal"/what is on the phone, playing (BBC!), is no showing on TV.
OK - this lead is a dead loss, but if I spend £30 on a Chromecast dongle, that still requires power. Neither of the USB slots (the other is 'Camera') seem to oprovide power0 -
You should really have got a power adapter with the cable , but yes you should be able to power this also through 5v usb ..
The reason why you can "cast" your youtube is that your TV must have the youtube application on it, all your phone is doing is telling that app what to play. It isn't mirroring, but rather a clever trick that youtube can do through your network (it can do that to any device that has youtube and connected to the same network)
You get a power supply with a chromecast so you wont have the same problem and I suggest this is the best option for you in these circumstances
hope this helps

"You get a power supply with a chromecast so you wont have the same problem and I suggest this is the best option for you in these circumstances"
think you are right. Off to get one now.
Surely the USBs SHOULD provide the power to this lead though. From the markings as I stated, they are there to provide POWER0 -
without knowing the make and model of your tv I couldn't possibly comment ..
But I would have thought so
You could test this by plugging your phone into the usb socket on your tv (via cable of course)
And see if your phone starts to charge.
There also may be a setting in your tv options to allow the powering of usb devices.

just tried that. both usb's DO charge phone.
Still strange they do nothing to the lead0 -

It's not "casting" youtube as such, it's sending the link to the youtube app and you're playing it on your tv via the app.
Depending on the model of your TV you could achieve similar results using other applications if you install allcast on your phone. Screen mirroring is different and it's doubtful your TV would support that without chromecast.
What is the make of the TV?0
