Yes, Thailand can be an addictive country. Go once and you will want to keep going back.
Where did you go? Maybe some of us Thailand regulars could recommend something different.0 -

I hate to admit it but Thailand has given way to Vietnam for us. After our first visit to Saigon and central Vietnam last October I can't fathom why we've avoided the place for so long.0 -

had 6 nights in Bangkok had 4 trips booked so only had 2 free days
going back in September am flying into BKK the onto Chiang Mai"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0 -
Went on a few holidays as a single person years ago and really loved the experience. I travelled with Explore Worldwide and Travelbag (although I think they have changed their name now)
I'm sure not everyone would like the type of holiday but travelling with other interesting and querky people, for me, made the holiday better. There were not just single people but also couples and friends travelling together. Ages varied from 20's to 60's
Now older with a family we are off to Thailand in the summer with the Family Adventure company (part of the Intrepid) for a similar sort of trip but for just families0 -

Two excellent side trips from Bangkok, easily done independently, are Kanchanaburi [Bridge over the River Kwai/Hellfire Pass] for a couple of nights, and Ayutthaya [Ancient capital of Siam] for a night.
Chiang Mai suffers a lot of air pollution from the traffic, and is like a mini Bangkok. Plenty to do around the city like a v.long day trip to the Golden Triangle [Thai/Laos/Myanmar border].0 -

I must admit I'm starting to feel the same myself. Maybe I have overdosed on Thailand having been there about 8 times in the last 10 years. It just became my default "go to" place for a holiday but maybe you can have too much of a good thing and I found myself more annoyed than fascinated on my last visit. However, Vietnam was a revelation in 2014 and I plan to go back ASAP.
However, if you are newbie traveller to SE Asia then Thailand is still probably the easiest country to get to grips with as it's the most tourist friendly.0 -

There's not much happening in Chiang Mai during the day but it's an excellent base to explore the area. I love the city at night though as it's much more laid back than Bangkok.0 -

I think you're slightly misinterpreting the criticism of those tours. I've travelled with far more interesting and "quirky" people on solo holidays than you could do on those tours - mainly because you meet an exponentially larger number and can pick and choose which ones you get close to.
Though the main reasons I don't like them is your stuck to someone else's schedule - someone who doesn't know the first thing about you - and stuck with the same people. If the people are great that's not an issue, but not every single person on every single tour is!
My last trip to Thailand was a great example of that. I had all these plans before I went then completely changed it one day after arriving in Bangkok. Halfway through that changed itinerary I then completely scrapped a big portion of the rest of the trip because I loved the place and the people there so much and wanted to stay longer. If I was on an Intrepid tour I'm sure it would have been good regardless, but there's no way I could have done that. Several of the people I met will likely end up being lifelong friends.
I don't know if you've ever tried backpacking before (or would want to now you have a family!) but the things you seem to love about the organised tours are just watered down and more restricted versions of what you get from independent solo travel.0 -

I've always wanted to go to Vietnam...and never understood why people avoided it. One day maybe I'll fulfill that dream
