Got it back, outer packaging (which would have had my name and address on) was missing and the machine had clearly been opened and taken out then put back in (upside down!!) but parts still wrapped up inside and doesn't look as though it's been used at all. Thanks to everyone on here for support!

So pleased for you, really glad it all worked out well. It's a lesson for all of us - keep your details updated. It's also a lesson in human nature. We all expect people to be decent and honest, it's such a shock when people aren't and it rocks us to our core. Some people obviously have personal issues and we need to make allowances from time to time. You have nothing to feel bad about and you acted impeccably and decently in an awkward situation which says a lot about you and your character. Well done you, enjoy your well deserved prize and thank you so much for sharing your story. :T

P.S. Slightly worried about relying on the Police to help in this kind of situation, especially since I don't know anyone that works in the force so I have no sway. :( Thanks for the head's up.
