Be very careful downloading free CD burners as many of them, and particularly Imgburn, come bundled with cr*pware such as OpenCandy (19 out of 56 a/v engines on Virus Total are flagging a warning for Imgburn).

Try Ashampoo Burning Studio Free. Not sure how it performs but at least it appears clean.

As above, some free ones come with rubbish bundled. Try CDBurnerXP, it's fully featured and free, and clean.

Cdburnerxp and Imgburn are both available from ninite.com with no unwanted extras.

Ashampoo works well and is easy to understand for a beginner. The only downside is that once you are on their email list they will keep sending you adverts for their other products but that's easily dealt with.

DeepBurner is brilliant. It's lightweight with no bundled junkware (last time I checked). There's even a portable version if you don't want to install it.

CDburnerXP comes with OpenCandy unless you choose one of the builds which don't have it in.

Click on "More download options" below "Download latest versions".

It does DVDs as well as CDs, and on any version of Windows including and newer than XP. Unfortunately it doesn't create bootable USB Flash Drives.

Downloaded CDBurnerXP, specifying without candy and Avast found - guess what - candy.

So I'll change my original question:

Which CD/DVD software, that I can buy, is clean and will best
    do the job?
