That's why I wouldn't recommend a Chinese phone not meant for the European market, since they don't come with Google apps installed and you have to know how to install them.
The phone is very usable; you just have to be aware of the fact you need to install Google apps yourself. You can find guides online easily.0 -
Where exactly did you think they were based as the says things for $2 and various other clues that they were not based in the UK (even without easily checking)
Does the phone pick up any UK networks?
They were basically offering you the 5% back to go away and stop annoying them. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
My sorry story...
I got hold of a cheap Lenovo S820e from China. What a disaster!
The phone was clearly from a Chinese telecoms company and was loaded to the sky with dodgy apps, advertising and spyware. Even legit looking regular and essential apps had been doctored by the Telco to push adverts over time.
Now, I have some ability with android and enjoy a challenge so, I rooted it, cleaned out all the doctored apps, installed all the Google core apps, replaced dodgy ones with stock or 3rd party better ones. After a lot of work it was perfectly clean, ran lovely, really nice hardware. Job done.
Then went to install a SIM to use it and here was the killer, it was dual SIM, I knew this already of course but the phone was designed for the Chinese market where they often like to have calls and data on different plans.
SIM1 slot could only handle calls and texts, SIM2 slot could only handle Mobile Data. Useless for here where its all on one SIM, sure as heck wasn't going to run two accounts to use the phone.
It was very cheap and had good battery life and great screen so I loaded it with Minecraft and gave it to a friend for their child, gratefully received.
No more import phones for me...
Oh yes your question where to go from here? give up on the Lenovo, go to Tesco and get her a SIM free Moto E, perfectly good phone for £79

Moto E a good choice, even cheaper at Vodafone PAYG. £39
Easily unlocked on ebay for under £2.. why bother with Chinese market phones?
