Zafira they catch fire. Scenics always have electrical problems. Zafira's are all plastic crap. Scenic electric hand brakes are a right pain in the !!!!.

Only certain models had the heater fault?

Re electrical problems.... Would you say even the newer one's are prone to the same level of electrical issues?

Scenic electric hand brakes are a right pain in the - havent had any problems with my 54 plate scenic but interested in hearing more...

Im looking at a 2011 Grand Scenic or zafira possibly. Or other recommendations?

The Zafira is probably a better bet than the Scenic.

The diesels in the Zafira are actually pretty decent, but they have issues and they mostly relate to the DPF (on the 1.9's anyway)

The fan problem and resultant fires are probably more an issue with bodging the fault rather than fixing it properly.

There were inlet manifold issues and EGR problems, but again similar affect many other diesels.

For simplicity I would go for a 1.6 or 1.8 petrol engine.

My sister has had a 1.7 CDTi Zafira for nearly 2 years and she has had no problems with it for what thats worth.

Seems he could tell you a lot about the Renault.

Does make you wonder why he was foolish enough to buy roof bars for a car he couldn't actually move as it always had electrical problems.:D

So is the general consensus that Vauxhall Zafiras petrol are better than Grand Scenics petrol/diesel?

I'll check for service histroy, probably go to a vauxhall dealership..

What can i expect a petrol to go in terms of miles before i think about getting rid?

    Probably look to go 2012/2013?

The Peugeot Turbo issues are caused by missed oil changes, the service interval is a bit optimistic, with a Full service history, low miles and a switch to interim oil changes between each service they can go on and on without the Turbo issue occurring.
Often people buy cars needing a service and just never change the oil and then complain about the turbo feed pipe getting caked up.

The right car could still be in the running if you take in to account it needs a half interval oil change to avoid carbon build up in the oil.

    Can't disagree.

    Have said similar myself.

How the previous owner treated the car is hugely important.

And some people do not change the oil routinely when they buy a car.

This was shown when many people thought my statement about always changing the oil when I buy a car, the caveat being if I had documented proof that it had been done recently.

Though I will admit that I have also changed it even when I was 100% certain t had been done a few thousand miles earlier.

This was one reason why my parents would most of the time buy new cars, as my dad used to believe that anything that failed was down to him.

They both serviced their cars religiously, even in retirement with only 3/4000 miles being covered annually they still got annual servicing.

    Thanks Paul..

Does the 1.6i mean it has injectors, would these go wrong on a petrol? How long will petrol engines run?

I suppose my other option is:

A grand scenic or a Mazda 5 - any thought of this?

Ive seen a Grand Scenic 1.5DCI with full service histroy from a Renault dealer in Western for 7850 with about 41k on the clock.

Petol cars have injectors too, but they tend only to be problematic on diesel cars.

Grand Scenic. Yes, i resold a couple of those in my time trading. Petrol ones. I quite liked them. Cheap as chips.

The later 1.5DCI engines in the diesels are better than the earlier ones, but i dont have any personal experience with them to comment.
  • I have a 2011 1.5dci scenic dynamique Tom Tom and I love it. It's not a grand scenic but not much difference apart from seating surely :)

I have had 4 renaults and recently sold my 2010 Megane coupe to buy the scenic. Have had it 6 months so far and so far so good. I had to get a bigger car to house a solid dog crate and I was sure I would get another Renault so it was either Megane tourer or the scenic.

I purchased it with 58000 miles and full service history and travelled from Edinburgh to Leeds to get it as couldn't find any near me with spec/mileage/price I wanted.

Been on a good few long journeys, never missed a beat. Surprisingly economical and I won't be parting with it for a long time.

Has the electric parking brake which has been fine, I am used to it now and quite like it. I have never had any problems with the 4 renaults I have had, my husbands friend (our mechanic) is an independent Renault specialist so even if there were any problems I know I wouldnt get ripped off.

Years ago we were looking for a 7 seater and narrowed it down to a newer Zafira or older Galaxy, I wasn't keen on the Zafira as sets very flimsy (that was back in 2004 though so maybe they've changed) we opted for the Galaxy.

What did you think of the Galaxy? Seats that don't fold flat into the floor put me off older Galaxies.
