I've been using Macs for years alongside both Windows and Linux and I've not found a printer yet that doesn't work with the Mac

    Try this one.......

    Ricoh SP204SN A4 Multifunction

Cheap end printer, no mac support.
If you buy a slightly older one, see if you can get one with system 10.9 instead of the latest one, and don't bother letting it update.

Bad advice, best advice is to have a quick read around the net prior to updating and look for major flaws. Apple do have the odd problem crop up but in general their updates are well thought out and work, including printer drivers.

I'd buy the newer one; the outgoing model may be cheaper, but in 3 years time one will be the 2015 model and the other the 2016 one?

There was always going to be at least one. :rotfl:

I've been using macs since system 6. OSX was a big advance but with 10.11 my Canon MP140 won't run on it. I'm sure there's a workaround but if I wanted to spend ages tinkering with computers to get them to work I've less time to actually use them as the convenient consumer items they're supposed to be.

This is MSE after all, and I don't feel I should conflict with the spirit of the forum by pushing upgrades that make big corporations richer at our expense.

Have you tried the 10.9 Maverics driver?

I use a couple of legacy products by running them inside VMs on my mac; that gives me the best options.

Thanks for that. Where's that available and is it easy to install?

Do you mean Snow Leopard server? I might have to look into that to restore functionality to my macbook ( I have appleworks databases, Acrobat Pro, etc.)

This article from a few years back sums up my worries about upgrades.

    It's on the canon site here;

    http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/inkjet/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp140.aspx?type=drivers&language=EN&os=OS%20X%2010.9%20%28Mavericks%29

Companies will often say a particular OS is unsupported or no longer supported to cover themselves. Older drivers often work without a driver update but there are a lot people out there who operate on the I have OS version x.x therefore I will only load a driver that specifically says it's for that version of the OS.

I've just replaced my old iMac with a new one, the old one came with either Leopard or Snow Leopard, I forget which. It's now running the latest version of the OS.

I installed the driver for my old Samsung CLX-26xx all in one colour laser scanner/printer the day I got the iMac and I've never manually updated the driver for it, the only updates have been Apple OS updates and it has worked perfectly on every update of OS X including the current 10.11

I did download the latest available driver for it for the new iMac but it's hardly a new driver as the printer has been out of production for a while.

In my case I'm using Windows, as the products accompanying applications run on it.

Again clearly written by a clueless idiot. Have you actually bought a refurb? Because if you had you will see what you have written is crap. Please come back when you know what you're talking about. You get a standard 1 year warranty and this can be extended with AppleCare by another 2 years to make 3 in total.

Please think before you write. I bet you're the kind of fool that buys dell running Windows.....unfortunately some people are too thick to reason with.

Lots of insults but rather light on what exactly you think is crap! Then again you come across as that sort of person.

    Have I bought refurbished/second-hand? N E V E R!

As I've said Apple has been repeatedly fined for misleading consumers regarding warranties. Then again you seem to be a fan of Apple's £280 extended warranties which John Lewis appear to give as standard.

But you are right about the Dell. I'm using a Dell 5k monitor linked to my 8 core 32gb Mac Pro.

    Some food for thought.....

"European Commission vice president Viviane Reding had claimed Apple's abuse of consumer rights across the EU has persuaded it to consider an pan-European approach to enforcement.
According to Reding, there is growing alarm in the EC about Apple's approach to warranties for its products.
“In at least 21 EU Member States Apple is not informing consumers correctly about the legal warranty rights they have,” she told the European Consumer Summit in Brussels. “This is simply not good enough.”
The EC first became concerned about Apple's business practices after Italian regulators fined the company for misleading advertising over their warranties and for failing to provide the two-year warranties consumers are entitled to under European laws."

"It had previously fined [Apple] €900,000 after receiving complaints from customers, who had been sold AppleCare warranties without having been informed that European laws automatically conferred a two-year warranty on their purchases."
