  • Can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure I saw mention somewhere recently...
...something about a change that means they don't have to show you proof - might have to go as far as court in order to see it which of course means more money.

You should definitely take more input on this though because I'm really uncertain about this.

Seems a bit much to actually say "we have proof but you can't see it before court" I think - bully tactics - but it wouldn't surprise me if they could get away with that.

Look into it. (Or maybe can give a more definitive answer)

No chance mate. It has been tried and tested so many times, the technology is advanced and up to scratch now. I am serving officer and when my OH did it, I had no answers. Bitter pill, swallow it and learn.

He was so cross with himself.

There are laws relating to disclosure of evidence prior to trial, but going to court will cost you dear.

Shame really - how many cops aren't on the roads because of that?

Gimme real coppers (traffic ones included) over those <expletive> piggy banks ANY day of the week!

    Pepipoo for advice.
If it's first or 2nd offence you're probably best off just taking it. Unless you think there's been an error.

DD drove OH's car, and shared a long trip with her OH. She got done doing 48 on an empty motorway on a Sunday night because the speed limit was 40 "to protect the workforce in the roadworks" (they weren't even there at that time) Anyway, because there was some uncertainty as to who might have been driving we asked for photographic evidence, and a photo came back by return. (couldn't see the driver tho' as it was dark :D )

What I'm trying to say is technology being what it is, they may easily be able to produce a picture, and have no need to wait until you take it to court.

Friends got off because there is very little time (14 days I think) in which they must notify you of an intention to prosecute or give a speeding ticket. Letter arrived too late which was nice for them.

if your OH was there and did the deed less than a fortnight ago, then I can't see a way out. Bad news, esp when you think how many hours work to earn that £60.

The policies relating to speed cameras have nothing to do with serving officers. Police get caught just the same if they speed, on (if not attending emergency calls) and off duty. Don't believe erveything you read in the papers.

It has nothing to do with money saving anyway.

Did the letter offer you the opportunity of viewing the evidence on-line ....check the back ..
I got caught last month ..I feel I should have been let off ..my excuse ..crash on motorway ment I had to use an alternative route ...The truth is when I saw the photo online ..the location and the calibration certificates ....It was all over ....my lucky break was that my company paid the fine ...I did ask them to accept the points too but that was not really negotiable ....
My advice ,,,learn the lesson .....head off a bit earlier ..and if you get snarled up in trafic ,just accept you may be late ....Thats it ,not hard to learn ...just hard to do ..
  • Erm - not what I meant, MissKJ. Sorry if it came across that way.

I mean the amount of money that gets chucked away on things that clearly don't work (how many times have you seen people slow down at speed cameras and speed up again as soon as they are past?) or serve any purpose other than as a source of revenue.

I'd much rather see money spent on actual real live traffic cops who get to go out on the street and catch real dangerous drivers (speed cameras don't spot middle lane hogs, people who don't check blind spots, drunks and certainly can't do the old "routine check" trick that turns up a fair bit of mischief)

Just like I'd rather see bobbies on the beat than a cctv camera on a pole.

Blue light emergency - floor it - otherwise stick to the limit - I'm well aware (and think it's right that it is like that).

    Short example...
Mate drives me home. I paid no attention to speed so he got up to 40mph in a 30 zone.
If there was a camera he'd have got flashed, probably got angry about speed cameras and kept a better look out next time.

As it stands a cop was following us.
Pulled up next to us at a red light and through the open windows came a short conversation...
Cop: "What's the limit on this road?"
    Mate: "I don't know"
Cop: "It's 30, do you know what speed you were doing?"
    Mate: "about 35?"
Cop: "Try 43 - if you hit someone at that speed you will kill them - now slow down."
Light changes to green, cop drives off.
That was it - we both sat there kinda stunned - he drives more carefully as a result.

Again - I'll take coppers over money boxes any day of the week. :)

Something simple - did you receive it within 14 days of the alleged offence? If not you may be able to get out of it - notice must be served within 14 days to be valid :D
