Mine is at least 8 years old and runs on Vista. It's very very slow even for opening websites. I have deleted old files and don't have more than about 150 songs and maybe 500 photos stored.
I think I need to upgrade but I don't think I need a new monitor. Is it possible to buy just a new CPU, one that's smaller than my slimline tower ? Or would it work out cheaper to buy the whole package ?
Can anyone recommend either please, and which OS is current ?
Sorry if these questions are a bit odd - I'm suffering a bout of middle-aged woman syndrome today !!!
Thanks

Current OS is Windows 10 (and is apparently the last, Microsoft will just incrementally improve it once you have it, for free.
Vista will stop being supported by Microsoft next April so only has a year left of secure use (it won't stop working but it will stop being updated). You could try to reinstall Vista if you have the discs or a recovery partition on your PC which could speed things up if its never been done (Windows can get slow over time) and get another year out of it.
Your monitor, mouse and keyboard should work with a new desktop pc. More knowledgeable people than me can help you with that bit0 -

For basic surfing, email etc, virtually any new PC will do you - just an example from a popular website I've used for years...

perhaps go with a very basic i3 based system like

I recommend the MEDION AKOYA E2049 for £205.95 if shopping for a PC.
Of cvourse you can refurb yours, if you want to get hands on, but adding RAM and running a clean install of the OS. Perhaps £20 in total.0 -
The CPU is a specific component inside the computer and a lot of people use this to describe the actual computer. So if you order just a CPU online you will be very disappointed lol.
But like others have said just replacing the tower unit with a new one is the best option.
I wouldn't bother upgrading any parts in the computer because the age of the motherboard will mean you will be limited to old technology anyway.0 -

Adding RAM will hardly make any difference to the computer and isn't worth it with an 8+ year old computer.0 -

Thanks for taking the time everyone. So now I know I can replace just the tower, I would like mini 'tower' rather than a large box ! Another ditsy question - is Win 10 always loaded or do I have to do that myself ?
If I'm correct, does anyone have any recommendations ?
Thanks EM0
