Without knowing anything about the spec of the PC, you may a sweeping comment that simply isn't true in most cases.

The OP stated " It's very very slow even for opening websites"... Even on an eight year old PC the two main causes are likely malware or a lack of RAM.
My nine year old PC arrived with 512MB of RAM and Windows XP.
The OP claims hers is eight years old. Vista was introduced nine years ago. Unless she has increased the RAM along the way, the likelihood is that it is low on RAM. In addition to this, there may be the bloat from the original install, that a clean install would solve.

P.S. I'm posting this on my nine year old PC(Feb 2007)...it now has 2GB of RAM and a £20 graphics card. Plays Full HD video and handles everyday tasks with ease.

I definitely think that a clean install would be the most beneficial especially if it has never been done!.

I understand what your saying but if the computer has a low amount of RAM then it must have always been slow. In that case then a RAM upgrade would be beneficial. But if it has always been "very very slow" then I would have thought this is something she would have sorted out when it was first purchased.

Good grief! My PC is about the same age and came with 6GB RAM! Even my low-spec work PC from that time had 1GB.

New Desk top - Have you checked if your monitor is compatible with Windows 10? Have you got a Printer - check 1st or you may be sorry. New Drivers are available (what a joke) look before you leap and budget for the extras?

Surely a monitor will just display what is fed to it regardless of what operating system is running on the pc - never heard of a monitor having to be "compatible" with w10

My JVC 32'' HD TV wasn't compatible, when connected via HDMI. No adjustments possible in Windows 10. Half the Taskbar was missing off screen and desktop icons too far to left and half missing. Not supported by Windows 10. TV is over 10 years old, but is a perfect picture and good as new, why should I dump it, for Windows 10. Not an issue for me now, full refund from Amazon for Windows 10 PC.

Windows 10 - never say never :rotfl:
Windows 7 - perfect HDMI picture on my JVC TV

I just fitted an SSD to my old Windows 98SE machine using an IDE to SATA adaptor. I used Acronis 9 to clone the old disk. Now boots up in under a minute.

(I have a scanner that won't work with Vista & some very old CAD software that requires it to boot up in MSDOS, so that's why I still have the machine.)

Believe me I'm not wasting your time, I'm grateful for you all taking time to research and reply ! I've book-marked the thread so I can read it a few times, get my head around the options !

    Thanks again

Did you try changing the resolution on the computer?. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't display correctly at the correct resolution.

Sounds like you needed to turn off the overscan on the TV input used for the computer.

Did you try changing the resolution on the computer?. Windows 10 won't let you change any resolution settings, check for yourself (W10 is very high tech) JVC TV - Windows 7 is plug and play - Windows 10 is crap! I dare say if I bought a new TV, Windows 10 would display correctly. Not an issue for me now, I got a full refund from Amazon, someone else can have the problem :D

W10 very High Tech - Windows Defender is not switched on by default, by the time I realised, my PC was full of Spyware/Trojans - all part of the learning curve, lesson learnt!

If you right click on the desktop then go into display settings and then advanced you can change the resolution, so it's definitely possible.
