When you've spent day upon day operating on dogs to correct breeding deformities and PTS hundreds of others that have no chance of surviving, it doesn't take rocket science to note those who don't have a clue about dog breeding issues and society in the UK.

ETA: your comments above tell me you're an elderly person completely out of touch with modern dog ownership and laws.

    PMSL! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The only reason you say I must be 'elderly' is because you have seen my profile that says I have been married 31 years. :rotfl:

And I'm not elderly anyway! I'm only in my mid 50s! Nice try though! :rotfl: You must be running out of insults. You really ARE losing the argument aren't you?

What's more, how incredibly rude and insulting to assume someone over 65 would know nothing about dogs! Dear me, you are really making a show of yourself on here. :rotfl:

Please tell me you're not a vet?

God forbid. I literally shudder at the thought of that!

With such a vile and repugnant attitude to small dogs, and the support of keeping big dogs in crates half their life; I will actually cry if I find this person is a vet.

Love how people throw insults when they have lost the argument. 3 people on here have definitely showed their true (unpleasant) colours.)

I don't get it, how did feral moon know what size crates and outdoor run husky runners dogs are in when he later said they don't know each other?

Hmmmm, that puzzled me a bit too. And Feral Moon is incredibly defensive of Husky Runner too. Don't know why.
    You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:

Hmmmm, I agree in a WAY.

I have been in a number of houses with dogs that do smell doggy, and the owners swear it doesn't!

But I have several friends with 1-3 dogs whose house has no doggy smell at all. (Well, maybe the teeniest bit! But they smell no worse than the humans haha. :D)

But I agree with Barry when he says that some do smell and the owners are in denial about it.

Doesn't mean they all stink though. :)

Oh I agree, some houses definitely do smell doggy but the owners swear they don't but that's like a smoker denying they, their clothes and their house smell.

To be honest although I wouldn't want my house to smell bad, if it did smell of my dog I wouldn't really care because no way am I not having a dog.

One of my friends didn't believe me when I told her that when my dog get wet he doesn't have that "wet dog smell". She came round one day when he was soaked from a long walk in heavy rain and she grudgingly admitted he did not smell doggy. In fact she said he smelt like talcum powder! Like my mother in law, she is someone who likes to "speak it as it is" and would definitely have told me if he did smell doggy. She doesn't even like dogs so would have no reason to lie.

As I said, my dog's fur is different to most other dogs. It is something people almost always comment on if they stroke him. Also he is groomed every other day and bathed every 4 to 6 weeks so that may make a difference

I don't find those dogs repugnant, I feel desperately sorry for them, and the humans who are responsible go down in my pecking order, not the dogs.

Lots of smaller breeds are very healthy and sturdy though, plenty were bred to work or are descended from working breeds. I've also never actually seen a dog in a handbag in this country, only in pictures of US celebrities and once in an Italian airport.

Some people's irrational hatred of smaller dogs is just prejudice and an odd sense of superiority.

I feel sorry for all breeds that have been messed up by humans and suffer as a result.

Personally I prefer fairly large breeds of dog but I certainly do not hate any breed. I will ask to stroke lots of different breeds that I meet out and about and find some small dogs such as pugs, French bulldogs, dachshunds cute.

I've seen a couple of small dogs being carried in a bag, mainly at dog shows

So you are not keen on dogs. yet attend dog shows? You must be a glutton for punishment!

Your first paragraph sums up my experience of owning GSD and Rotties, precisely. I've owned two of each breed (amongst others) and they've always behaved exactly as you've described. I've never had completely secure gardens or fields. Where there's a will, there's a way but none of mine ever ran off despite spending most of their lives off lead, even across open fields when they've spotted prey to chase. They'll go so far then realise I'm too far away for comfort so turn about and gallop back towards me lol

There's a reason I've never owned gun dog breeds or terriers :rotfl:

Even the sight hounds I've owned have never strayed far, and have needed even less exercise! My greyhound was happy with a couple of half hour walks a day, then vegged out on the sofa most of the time. But, my current (2yo) GSD needs at least two 2-3mile walks a day which incorporate lots of ball slinging and chasing his friends around the field, plus half hour tracking training.

For your nose work, if you are going to compete in working trials at some stage in the high grades you will come across metal in the square search. If your dog refuses to pick it up and bring it out he will not score. It is so easy to get them over this and yet people struggle with dogs that will not pick up a bunch of keys or a spoon.

All you do is use a wine cork or two on a spoon and tie a rag to the keys. They will pick them up and then when they are used to it cut the corks/rag a bit smaller very gradually until they is hardly anything there.

I can also help you with send aways and redirection because I used to have 30 dogs or more coming to me for Working Trials training. I had several acres and all the equipment (for my own dogs) so people came initially to use it and then before I knew it I was in charge of classes. I had taken 6 of my own to TDex.

    This sort of thing:

It looks like a fun hobby for you all - not sure I'd call it work though.

As Sibes were originally bred as sled dogs they do see it as work! It's a way to continue doing what they were originally intended for, just without the snow.

Hi there, I know you have not asked for advice as stated and I really have none to give, however we have a lovely little black cat called Amy, she is fully grown (about 11 years old). I have a husband and twin boys and they love her to bits. She has scratched both my sofas, runs up the curtains etc and if I shout or get cross the boys plus OH say "Oh Amy, Amy" she even knocks on the bedroom window to get in at 2am like a wayward teenager after a night out!! Drives me insane so YES I can completely understand how you feel. If I were to give advice re this I would suggest some rules as mentioned in other posts unless you are shouted down like I am. :) Good luck.. perhaps if you make friends with the dog you might be able to tolerate it a bit more. :) I am thinking of you.

Hey, I haven't read the whole thread, too long and the bits I read seemed to be people bickering :(

I have a 16mth old black lab and have an airwick full size freshmatic in the kitchen and one in the sitting room - I always make sure they both have the same smell in though! The cans of spray are very neutral and it goes off when it detects an odour. Anyone that has come into the house says it does not smell of dog - just a fresh smell...

    Might be worth a try

Some breeds have been bred so that they have more heath problems - those go down my pecking order.

Those who haven't seen these pictures of dogs a century ago may find them interesting.

I think vets have to take some share of the blame for this. If they spayed a female dog at the same time as giving her a C- section then we would not have Bulldogs being bred with huge fronts and heads and very narrow pelvic areas. Mother Nature would see those deformities die out very quickly.

Equally they can do cosmetic surgery on eye problems which are great for the individual dog but madness for the breed because nobody knows if a famous sire has such a fault and is passing it on.

When did I say I am not keen on dogs? I love all animals especially dogs. I have had dogs all my married life.

I go to dog shows because quite a few of my friends show their dogs and the siblings of my present dogs are all shown
