  • Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for the replies, I forgot to check back yesterday.

So, I drove my new car on my 200 mile round trip yesterday and I still wasn't a fan however, still aware could be an adjustment period and again no one to blame but myself for this.

The garage called me back late last night to see if I wanted to wind down when they explained to me what that was I went in this morning to discuss it further.

Basically, wind down meant they cancelled the agreement as though it never happened, but only if I chose another car from them not from group stock as they wont pay to transport it (because of the cost incurred to them) but from the actual forecourt.

The man asked a bit about what I needed the car for, I explained and he said you need a diesel. He had 3 diesels in stock, a beetle, a fiesta and a focus.

They left the decision completely down to me but did say to sort it all out it needed to be done today.

I ended up selecting the Focus its 2 years old with 30K on the clock and £110 more overall with a 2 year warranty , took it out for a test drive and was much much more comfortable.. The manager apologised that I had been sold into a 1.2 petrol and I was like noooooo it's not your salesmans fault, it's mine! I should have researched it more, I have so many lessons learnt for the next time honest it's completely my fault.

The garage have been more than accommodating and lovely to deal with and I am mortified about the whole thing.

Thank you so much for all of the replies though, I really do appreciate it.

Next time I'll come here first before even approaching a garage!

Have you ever driven a small engined city car?

With that comment I suspect the answer may be no.

As you have no low down pull and need to be revved to get meaningful progress.

Such progress will still not be swift when we are talking about 60/70bhp.

Another point relating to a comment about about annual mileage.

Lots of companies in London seem to be buying small engined petrol cars. Some of the meter reading cars are petrol for instance.

I can't see these cars doing less than 20k a year and will be on the go most of the day, but crucially the miles driven are probably not really compatible with a DPF equipped diesel car.

Yes. I currently have a 1.2 litre Fiat Panda. It cruises quite happily in top gear at legal motorway speeds.

A few years ago, I had a 1.0 litre Citroen Visa. That was really under-powered. It would also cruise quite happily at sensible revs, though I had to floor the accelerator at the slightest hint of a hill.

The only reason to be in the 4-5K RPM range is when you need to accelerate. Unless that's going up a hill, it probably won't be for more than a few seconds.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I never thought the 1.2 Panda was particularly underpowered.

Certainly not in the realms of a 1.0 City car such as the ones being discussed.

I have done some reading on Kia forums out of curiosity and many suggest buying the 1.25 Picanto due to relative lack of power of the 1.0, when I bought there wasn't one available at the dealer I purchased.

Depends on gearing. In my Imp (which produced a stonking 39bhp from its 875cc), in top gear at an actual 70mph it would be doing 4700rpm.

0-60 time was about 22 seconds, but you could drive it on the motorway for long journeys without difficulty, it would do the legal limit and some more so would keep up with traffic, and the engine was completely happy to run at a sustained 5000rpm.

  • 1.2 small car for a 600 mile commute a week? Wow. I do around 25k a year on my car and I can barely manage that!

I have a polo 1.4 blue GT and can well understand that you will notice the difference between that and any " city" type car after all the polo does 0-60 in 6. 8 secs. not many of the type of car you are driving now will get anywhere near that.
You will I'm sure get used to your new car, but I would be using your husbands polo for the long journeys, you will find it less stressful.
6.8 seconds isn't that bad. You should test drive my car and then you'll know what a true sports car feels like ;)

Your 3-year old new car? Why do you keep up with this nonsense?
