look in shops such as QD/ Odd and Bods for wool being sold off I just bought 10 balls of lovely fluffy wool for 50p a ball (£2.50 in wool shop)
Some of the cheap shops seem to be selling ogg the wool that was fashionable last winter eg fluffy for scarves. Look around when you shop QD also has large balls fo Aran blue or white for a few pounds perfectly ok for kids sweaters

  • am so pleased to see a long knitting thread , have posted a few things on knitting myself recently as i have re-started after many years. did a few squares and long scarves as a child and then picked it up again in the eighties when mohair jumpers were all the rage but so expensive. made a few garments and then went onto a few bits for the kids when small. most of my big things have to have a t shape if a pattern is involved as i never could get the hang of decreasing stitches while incorporating a pattern, so if anyone has any tips on how to master this would be very grateful. stopped again then for another 15 years and picked it up again last year. was put off as i bought loads of wool from bootfairs and used to stash it behind the sofa and had an awful outbreak of moths. even after moving house some five years later was still pulling out really expensive jumpers from wardrobe with holes in them. so put me off big style. no major outbreaks for a while, got rid of all wool and have done everything i can to de-moth the house and touch wood no recently ruined garments. started knitting again last year as now disabled and mainly house bound due to pain and depression and started knitting baby bits for my neonatal unit as i remember how short they always were when i had my son. am scared now of stock piling as still see the odd moth about so use it as i buy it and have wardbrobes full of cedar and lavendar. have bought the knitting mag that was out earlier in the year that comes with a ball of wool and instructions for a square that will become a shaker blanket. will work out pretty expensive when i have finished but the magazines are great and really teach you everything so am learning lots. bit behind at moment as not been feeling great so about 18 mags behind. love the idea of our own little group on o/s. apologies for long post but so nice to rant to other knitters. made lovely jumper for hubby last year t shaped agin unfortunately and have promised son aran polo neck for xmas so on look out for some aran wool with a fleck for effect as it will lack pattern due to my problem of decreasing. loooking forward to lots more posts :j
  • Another thread has been going recently on knitting your own dishcloths - I posted the site below that another kind OS'er mentioned. I've never tried knitting dishcloths before but they seem v quick and easy - an ideal project for when you want to do something quick, in between bigger projects. Might also be good starter projects for beginners. Mind you, some of these patterns look so cute it seems a shame to waste them on dishes!

Welcome homealone: sorry to hear about your moth problem. I should probably think about getting some cedar balls as my wool stash is growing at a frightening rate - thanks for the warning.

    I've found the hat!

Go to the Unilever website here and select TV ad. Not sure what style you'd call it - looks a bit like a beret, but not to one side (if you see what I mean!). I've had a look in my extensive pattern collection, but can't find anything similar...

  • Thanks mags50 - the link to the ysolda shop is great. Some really unusual designs there which I'm just itching to try. I look the look of the 'snow white' top - might have to add it to my list of forthcoming projects.
