Help! Accidental payment via Credit Card for Service Charge :(

Hi All,

I hope you are all having a good weekend so far.

I was hoping for a little bit of advice in relation to a costly mistake I made yesterday.

My property service charge was due, and I decided to make the payment online for the first time. I saw on the property management website that there was a surcharge of around 4% on credit card payments, so I was going to pay by debit card.

However, I accidently paid by credit card as I am so used to using the Barclaycard, and hardly ever use the debit card!

They have now slapped an additional £60 charge on my account for doing so. I was surprised that there was no warning just before I made the payment alerting me to the fact that I was using a credit card, and usually the Barclaycard verification page also appears which didn't happen this time.

I really cannot afford for this £60 to be wasted like this (and the whole reason I made thr payment in full this year is because I didn't fancy paying £50 for thr privilege of a 12 month payment plan this year).

It just makes me really :( thinking that this hard earned money has been wasted due to a genuine 30 second slip up.

Is there anything I can do? Barclaycard suggested I speak to the management company, and the management company have said: "I am afraid that once the card payment is completed we are charged for that cost and must pass that on to you".

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply G_M!

Surely the management company can cancel the transaction from their side, or Barclaycard can from theirs?

I was also reading about a 0.2%/0.3% cap that was put in place for credit card payments a couple of years ago?

    Thanks

I suppose the agent could cancel the payment. But why would they want to? Barclaycard may still chage a transaction fee to them (not sure) and if so they would be out of pocket.

Well you spoke to BC who
suggested I speak to the management company
so clearly they are not going to cancel the transaction.

    And
the management company have said: "I am afraid that once the card payment is completed we are charged for that cost and must pass that on to you".
so clearly they are not going to cancel the transaction.

There may not have been an immediate warning before you paid, but the website must have made it failry clear as you said:

BC wouldn't cancel the transaction without authorisation from the MC, or in the case of fraud etc. If the MC have been charged a fee from BC, then they are not going to want to be out of pocket either.

It seems you will have to chalk this up to experience, and be more careful next time with payments.

Write a letter of complaint asking them for a breakdown of the fees they are charged when processing the credit card.

It's unlikely you will get any refund I'm afraid.

Op, why don't you have a standing order or direct debit set up from your bank account on the day your service charge payment is due?

That way, no card fees, no late payment fees, no monthly payment fees and you never have to remember again!

I'm pretty sure that when you take a card payment you have to legally quote the amount to be debited PRIOR to the amount being taken as that is the amount being authorised regardless of what the fees included in that total are. If you later decide to add a separate standalone transaction for fees alone then you would need to authorise that SEPARATELY with the cardholder.
