I'm pretty sure that when you take a card payment you have to legally quote the amount to be debited PRIOR to the amount being taken as that is the amount being authorised regardless of what the fees included in that total are. If you later decide to add a separate standalone transaction for fees alone then you would need to authorise that SEPARATELY with the cardholder.

I don't think so. When I use my credit card to buy online in other currencies I get 'non sterling transaction fees' added onto my statement. I don't see that.

Plus it does say it, the amount plus 4%
  • I'm afraid its something you won't do again.., I always check direct payments several times before I click send or whatever because so many things can go wrong. And its a nightmare when that happens. It only happens once lol.

Completely different scenario as it's the card company that is billing you rather than the card merchant -as a card merchant you have to let the customer know how much you will be debiting before you take the money from their card.

Credit card fees are usually a percentage and is likely to be less than 2% than 4%. Debit cards are charged at 20 or 30p per transaction regardless of value. On my card processing agreement refunds on CC refund the percentage, refunds on debit cards incur another transaction charge. In your case the company could probably refund without loss but it would involve a little extra work so they may well refuse.

You are no doubt annoyed at having to pay the extra, but if you have money to pay £1500 are you really unable to pay another £60?

Op, why don't you have a standing order or direct debit set up from your bank account on the day your service charge payment is due?

That way, no card fees, no late payment fees, no monthly payment fees and you never have to remember again!

Nice idea, although some property management companies don't give out their bank details. I guess it makes life easier for them to only give the option to pay off the account balance in full.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
