Do you clean and decorate when you decide to sell

Do you clean and decorate when you decide to sell .
I like to leave a place in move in condition .If that means I decorate I do it ,

I am viewing a house on Wednesday.
i have seen two internal photos online ,not the cleanest house but nothing to bad
.The house has a tenant at the moment .

However the house was petrol bombed in January .The outer layer of the double glazing in the bathroom was broken and there was smoke damage to the rear wall . Presumably smoke damage inside .I havent seen inside yet .

The tenant is still living there and the window is still broken .
The tenants previous property was also burnt .

In the landlords position I would have repaired the damage ,tarted it up ,got rid of the tenant and sell. .

    Yes. We replaced hideous PINK bathroom carpets with lino, painted hideous green kitchen wainscotting white, and touched up scuff marks.
    We did it not to add value but to ensure no one dismissed us at the rightmove stage.

    Removing evidence of a fire is a little different to simply smartening up though.

    Wow, petrol bombed? was it a targeted act or a random one? i would be worried the people wouldn't realise that the house had been sold and do so do something like that again!

    I would totally recommend cleaning though. I went to a viewing yesterday and the pictures of the house were lovely it looked modern, clean and bright. It actually was really rather grubby. Marks on walls where people had sat against, greasy head marks in the kids rooms as the beds didn't have head boards. Grime on handles of kitchen cupboards and round light switches. everything was just a bit tacky when you touched it.

    All modern fittings, new extension and kitchen but it looked like the family were just not big on cleaning (loads of clutter - i mean loads - trying for 'vintage' but looked more like a jumble sale) all gathering dust.

    Though it wouldn't be the main reason for not buying it would be on my negative list mainly as it they couldn't even clean for an open house what will it be like when everything is moved out?
    Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

    Aren't you worried that it was petrol bombed? Do you know who did it/why?
    I'd be more concerned about that rather than the internal pictures.

    But yes, I think you attract more buyers by cleaning / decorating. As someone else said you don't necessarily increase the price, you possibly appeal to more people.

    If it's clean and tidy you assume they've looked after the maintenance of it but vice versa, you worry what else they've neglected if it looks shabby.

    I'd be more concerned about that rather than the internal pictures.

    Says the tenant's previous property was torched as well.....

    As a buyer, I might be especially interested in properties which were dirty, undecorated and/or superficially damaged.

    Many other buyers would be put off, so the price is likely to be low - even after considering the cost of cleaning, decorating and/or repairing.


    But as others say, I would investigate the circumstances of the petrol bomb.

    Intresting reading .
    Drugs , having forged bank notes
    allegation of sexual assault ,resulting in previous fire damage .
    Stole phone charger from o2 shop .
    Stole from holland and barrett shop .
