Shared driveway problems

So I finally bought a house a month ago. The house is semi detached with a shared driveway/access road, I can fit my car behind my house and gate on a paved area, and the other house has a small garage, presumably used for storage. I was away for on holiday for 1 month when I purchased the house so I assume my neighbour took it upon him self that he can park there as no one is living there.
Anyway I get back from holiday and find the street is completely full and I had to park on another Street, not what you want at midnight. I have a word with him the next day and introduce myself, he explains it's his mums house who's in care and he's fallen out with his wife so living there.
My problem is he could be there for weeks, or years. I've tried having a few friendly words about it but he will move his van for me but just will not park on the road. I get back from work at 7am/pm and can never park. Where as he gets home at 430 when there is plenty of on street parking.
I don't want to fall out with my neighbour but really don't know how I can resolve this. Shall I park behind my house (when I have access) and wake him up at 5am to move his van, leave a polite note on his van or what.
It sounds silly but it's causing me a lot of stress thinking about it everyday

Can you block him in and turn the tables? Forcing him to come and ask you to let him out all the timeChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Because he parks at the front of the drive, even though you could fit 3 cars on, the only way I can block him is by parking in front of the drive on the road between the other cars, I could do this on my days off, but not sure about doing it on nights when I get in at 630am and he'll be waking me up at 830am.
I did Park where he did on my second day and he just parked across the footpath blocking pedestrians and me0 -

This is when I parked where he usually does in the car, and when he blocked me after, I can fit between the 2 cars without blocking the pavement.0 -

You don't want to fall out with him, but it's ok for him to fall out with you????
Talk to him again - tell him that his personal problems are not your problems.
Tell him that you need both him and you to be able to park correctly - end of!0 -
He can't get his Van in the back of his as it's too big to fit. The only alternative for him is to park on the road which he won't do0

Any way you could 'request' him to park on the road temporarily, to save you a space (!), then when you get in he swaps? :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0

So the red van is his and his the red car his or yours ?0 -
You have to try to remember, at the back of your head, that he can't make HIS problem YOUR problem.
You have no problem. You are using the shared drive, as intended and can drive through and park out of the way in your own back garden space.
He has the problem because his garage is full of stuff and he can't/won't park on his front garden and won't park in the street/another street.
So, he is making HIS problem YOUR problem .... and, you have to remember that when you're trying to explain this to him.
It's not your problem to solve/fix, it's his - and he needs to get on with it.0 -
I like this suggestion and will ask him when I see him tomorrow.
Sorry wouldn't let me post links. The red corsa in the picture is mine and the Ford Honda motorsports Van is his. My car in this picture is where he usually parks when I got home before him.0 -

That's not a solution. The OP's then trapped at home, waiting on the "kindliness" of him to be available/move his van on demand.
What if she did that, got inside her house, phone rang, had to go out again ..... then came home an hour later and 2 hours later had to go out again? And by now it's midnight.0
