I moved about 4.5 years ago.., got the boxes on ebay, more than enough for my 3 bed house in spite of being a hoarder of books, and they were nice and strong too.

Did it again three months ago, paid more for the boxes, and was very disappointed when they arrived. Some medium sized boxes were ok, but the rest were single walled and useless for anything with any weight. I did have a good stock of amazon boxes, but not enough. Had to manage but those single walled boxes just fell apart even with good taping and limited distance to carry them. Wouldn't buy off ebay again. All of the listings seemed to be about the same, when you read the details they just aren't strong enough.

I did keep clothes in chest of drawers and taped the drawers up, but took them downstairs first (took drawers down seperately, then taped them).

Was thinking about taping up the chest of drawers we use for clothes with the clothes still in..?! and the same with the wardrobes, not sure if that's a good idea or not!
Don't tape up the drawers, just leave them full. I've never emptied drawers on a move, always been told not to by the removal guys. Wardrobes are different. They can't move them full but may have proper wardrobe boxes available.

I got rid of my removal boxes on Freecycle. Several people wanted them so they went quickly.

A lot of the boxes on the auction site are quite small! Will see what the removal companies quote, though wanted to start packing this weekend!

Smaller boxes can actually be better than large boxes which get very heavy and awkward to carry (think trying to move boxes up / down stairs and through doors without scuffing walls, or getting elbows bumped on doorways)

We are moving soon and when I book the removal service I will be looking to spend the extra on the full pack service. Last time we moved home a friend with a van kindly helped us but unfortunately so much got damaged I want a proper service this time. Plus I just do not have the hours in the day to pack the house up.

Try McDonalds after lunch. All their fries come in cardboard boxes that they'll only leave for recycling otherwise.
  • We just nipped over to Tesco and got loads of cardboard boxes as they tend to throw plenty away. Unless you need extra large boxes, I'd highly recommend popping over to a few supermarkets and see if you can grab yourself a few of these for free.

I got mine from the removal co. Paid for them upfront but then the cost is refunded when they are returned. The company I used would make one collection (I just had to flatten them and arrange for them to be picked up) but I didn't return them all - they refuned the pnes I did. I could contineu to return boxes for refund fr up to 6 months after the move, but they would only pick up once, and only in the first month, after that I would have had to take them back to the depot.

In the end, I didn't return any ore after the first collection as I was having lots of work done on the house so didn't fully unpack for a long time.

The previous time I moved my boss let me take as many document boxes as I wanted- they were perfect for packing books as they are relatively small so come a manageable weight, they have hand holes in the end so are easy to carry, and they even have space to write whet the contents are.! That move was 15 years ago and I still have the boxes, they've been used in the moves of two other family members, too!

That sounds incredibly expensive, especially outside London. Have you tried packing your own boxes and getting a 'man with van' quote instead?

I agree, I am staggered at the cost of moving literally 10minutes down the road. I got another quote yesterday for £300 JUST for the removal and £50 for the packing. I cannot understand it - I am not even bringing a bed/wardrobes/fridge/freezer etc. Just living room furniture!

Looking at another company today who have quoted £179 for the move - worried now they will not be legit with all the higher quotes!

I will have a look into man with a van in my area today, thank you!

Your local Halfords will happily give you boxes if you ask. I have had some strong boxes from there which used to hold screenwash etc, so heavy-duty.

I work in a school kitchen so have kept the boxes from food deliveries. Local supermarkets will no doubt save some for you if you ask.
