What do people find so undesirable about allowing someone into their house to read a meter?

If you are referring to me then in reply I do not find it undesirable. However they called on the 25 January 16 and then called a few days ago to read the meter.. What I find unacceptable is that the reader was told not to leave a card and the meter had to be read by them.

I give them a reading every few weeks and is inline with my estimated usage so I really do not what the issue is.

It was just a general query regards why some people don't seem too keen to give access to meter readers. But specifically in your case, in your original post you just stated that 7 months after having your meter read you weren't happy that you'd had an email saying they were coming to read it again? Once every 6-7 months doesn't seem over the top?

You don't need to let them in every time anyway, sacsquacco is quite right that most meter readers will happily take the reading from you on the doorstep, or take the reading from a card stuck to your door or window. But your energy supplier might want a meter reader to get a reading with their own eyes for any number of reasons.

There could have been a mistake in the previous reading that was submitted (by the meter reader in their January visit), or you could have made a mistake in one of the readings you have submitted online. They might want to do a visual check on the meter for safety or to check that the meter/supply hasn't been tampered with. The meter reader who visited in January might have been one of those that reads for lots of different suppliers and it was just read because they were in your area, and it might be that E.on are now sending out their own meter reader.

Someone does have to visually inspect the meter every now and then (think as mentioned it is every 2 years, gas meters more often than that?) and although the energy suppliers love people to send them readings regularly, they do like a meter reader to do it too. And at least nowadays it's usually only once or twice a year instead of every quarter. But its often a separate company that does the meter reading than your supplier, and they don't always communicate very well with each other, so you do get times when you get a few visits more than you really need.
