DEPARTURE DATE 20/03/2016
MANCHESTER TO CANCUN
Boarded plane AT Manchester airport at 9 am ENGLISH TIME
Plane took of from Manchester airport at 9,30 am
Plane arrived near cancun airport around 3pm mexico time
WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS A Radar fault at cancun airport so our plane had to fly of to Cozumel airport arrived around 4 pm mexico time
Stuck on Cozumel airport till around 6pm, plane runs out of fuel so no air conditioning on the plane, everyone is going mad been on runway around 2 hours
Around 7,30 pm we are told that pilots cant fly the plane out of hours and that new pilots were around 30 mins away kept getting told this till they eventualy arrived around 9,00 pm
The new pilots then told us there was an engine fault this was sorted eventualy around 9,30 we then set of for cancun airport and arrived around 11 pm
So we had actualy been on Cozumel airport mostly without air conditioning for around 6 and a half hours this means were were on the airplane for around 18 hours

We actualy arrived at our hotel around 12,30pm and all this absolutely spoilt our holiday, I alison ended up with a chest infection AND BEING SICK AND HEADACHES AND as I have just come out of cancer treatment and just finished 6 lots of kemoTHERAPY and 3 full weeks of radiotherapy,i thought we would book a nice holiday with Thomas cooks AFTER SUCH A BAD YEAR WITH CANCER SO AFTER FINISHING THE LAST RADIOTHERAPY TREATMENTS I GOT PERMISSION OF THE DOCTORS TO GO ON HOLIDAY AT LAST , AND THEN OBVIOUSLY ALL THIS HAS HAPPENED WHICH HAS TOTALLY RUINED OUR HOLIDAY,I SPENT MOST OF THE HOLIDAY FEELING SICK , WHEN I GOT BACK OF THE HOLIDAY I WAS BOOKED IN FOR HEPCEPTIN INJECTIONS FOR MY CANCER BUT DUE TO BEING ILL HAD THESE CANCELLED AND THEN HAD TO BE TAKEN TO ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY DEPT TO BE SEEN BY A DOCTOR AS I HAD A HIGH TEMPRATURE AND WAS BEING SICK AND ACHING ALL OVER , ALL THIS WAS DOWN TO BEING STUCK ON A PLANE ON A RUNWAY IN COZUMEL FOR OVER 6 HOURS WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING ONLY 1 LITTLE DRINK OF WATER my boyfriend also ended up with a sore throate to EVENTUALY THE PLANE DOORS WERE OPENED AND ALLS WE GOT WERE FUEL FUMES ALL THE CHILDREN WERE SCREAMING AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL WERE GOING MAD SO THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT BEING STUCK ON A PLANE FOR AROUND 18 HOURS BUT THE ACTUALY WAY WE WERE TREATED WHEN ON THE GROUND IN COZUMEL WHICH HAS RUINED THE HOLIDAY WE BOOKED WITH THOMAS COOK
SO OBVIOUSLY WE WOULD LIKE SOMETHING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS ITS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY ITS ABOUT A RUINED HOLIDAY AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD DO ABOUT IT
OBVIOUSLY WISH I DIDN’T HAVE THE CANCER AND WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD A GREAT HOLIDAY WITH THOMAS COOK HOPE YOU CAN SORT SOMETHING OUT FOR US THANKS ALISON

Firstly - I would take off your name and address.

Then I would stick to the facts in a simple timeline and remove the capital letters.

Your cancer has nothing to do with your holiday so stop shouting about it.
The delay getting to Cancun was out of the control of Thomas cook so I would suggest that you chase the un-named airline for compensation for the delay and be grateful for anything that you can get.
As for the ruined holiday, no company is going to compensate you for that, you may get vouchers towards another trip away but that will likely be the best you can do in that respect.

Just curious - did you have travel insurance to cover you in case anything happened while you were out there?

If you felt sick on holiday, did you seek any help/treatment at the time? Did you call your insurance company regarding getting help/treatment?

Also I'm fairly sure that it's unwise to take on such a harsh travel schedule as that so soon after treatment - not that it makes any difference to your issues but just a side note. (Doctor may have signed you off, but the reality is being healthy enough to travel is not always the same as being fit to travel. Was the doc fully aware of your destination & the resulting flight time involved?)

Like others have said, take a breath, condense it to the facts & approach it from there, your cancer treatment while indirectly relevant (weakened immune system) is not the main point of contention. The delay & the conditions you were kept in are.

How will you prove that you feeling sick, chest infection/headache was down to being stuck on the plane ?

I'd rewrite your letter leaving out all the stuff about cancer and resend it. Thomas Cook will see loads of letters about spoiled holidays, they'll look at the facts, not your medical history. It was your choice to travel so soon after your treatment.

To be honest, it just sounds as though you're using your illness to make them offer compensation. I'm not saying you're not ill, just pointing out that this is how it comes across.
  • Can I just say that several years ago we flew to Boston for a wedding anniversay break and there were fumes smells coming throught the air vents so we shut them off. However, I am quite susceptible to throat and chest things and our holiday was spolit by me having a terrible throat and chest infection when we got there. So much so that my OH says we saw more of CVS pharmacy than Boston! So I really feel for you being stuck on the plane for all those hours and hope you get recompense of some kind.

Alison - this needs doing ASAP.
Very unwise to post personal details on a public forum.
You also need to do the same with the identical post on the Flight Delay board (posted incorrectly on the Easyjet thread).

I too think you are concentrating too much on your illness in your complaint.
Complaints should be concise, to-the-point and unemotional - and yours isn't.

How did you word your complaint to Thomas Cook (I'm assuming you have made a complaint as you have a reference number)?

What response (if any) have you had from Thomas Cook?
  • That is just ridiculously hard to try to read. Cut the shouty capital letters. I can guarantee that anyone in CS opening that letter will put it to the bottom of the pile because it will take so long to get through.

Cancer is horrible, but it's how you deal with it that really matters. You're treating yourself as a victim, and coming across as playing the 'poor little me' card. It's irrelevant and won't help your complaint, so stop shouting about me.

There'a lot of other waffle in there that needs cutting out. Boarding time, take off time, children screaming, what other people were doing. Just to stick the basic facts, short and to the point.

I'm not sure going on a longish flight with a weakened immune system was the brightest of things to do. What you caught could have just as easily been a bug that another passenger had come on board with.

Was the sickness anything to do with the six lots of chemotherapy you had just had?
Would your doctor state in writing that your illness was absolutely nothing to do with your existing or prior illness?
These are the questions you will need to answer factually when asked by Thomas Cook or by your travel insurance.
Were you able to get travel insurance?

+++ PLEASE REMOVE +++ your personal details from your post ASAP, including booking numbers as these can be used for dodgy purposes..

I already know what you look like (Brunette) and you should remove that ladder from your front garden as its attractive for burglars to use on your house. I am a nice person, but a lot of people out there are not!
