Elona Please don't feel mean . I have mentioned elsewhere on the threads about my cancelling a number of dds I had paid for decades to various well known charities . Over the past few years I was inundated with letters for increased payments which eventually took on a tone little short of emotional blackmail . At the same time they were enclosing freebies , address labels , packs of cards and a calender each year all of which was taking funds from where they were needed .
I then started getting calls on my exdirectory phone line . In the end
face to face rudeness from chuggers from each of these charities on the high street in the local town led to a firm email to each of them and a confirming letter to tell them I had cancelled the direct debits and to never contact me again . Letters kept coming but I haven't had any for a while .
I don't like the fact that they are selling on peoples details , getting access to information you haven't given them and also frightening old and vulnerable people on their own doorsteps or home phones ,
Don't even get me started on the salaries to those at the top .
There are good guys out there but mine we the main charities .
We have a lifeboat station which serves us and the surrounding area a local air ambulance , an an amazing hospice these and the local homeless and foodbanks are where my support goes .
Sorry for the rant . I would advise that if you happen to get anyone at the door again you cultivate the royal we . You don't have to provide reasons for refusal a simple " we don't deal with cold calls is enough . Act as if you have a houseful and not alone in the house polly x

That is a very good idea.

Quite a few of the neighbours are a lot older than me and we are in a neighbourhood watch area so don't expect to be chugged on the doorstep.

We are too Elona , the sign is about six feet from my house and doesn't deter them . What annoys me is unlike the old days when volunteers were fundraisers a lot of those knocking at doors have no knowledge of what they are representing . The chugger episodes were foe , greenpeace and nspcc . Each one was verbally abusive and one actually grabbed my arm and said yeah f the world up and leave us to clean up your sh*t . I asked him what foe were doing and he was reading from a script . Few days later he's nspcc . Greenpeace guy was doing it for the beer money and said if I signed up I would find out what it was . Both were told I had been a member for over thirty years and had campaigned with both to stop nuclear waste dumping along this coastline . Reply - you would say that !

    That sounds awful.

Usually if I am sitting in the living room I can see if anyone is approaching the house and decide whether or not to answer the door.

I seem to have been bobbing up and down all day answering the door or the phone.

  • You can't give to every charity, if you give what you CAN afford to give to the causes you believe to be the best that's as much as anyone CAN do. I give where my heart is and where it will help the local community and I buy from the charity shops of those causes I feel are helping the world, no one can do more than that!

I hate it when I do this , was it mandy rice davies or christine keeler who said " well he would say that "? It will drive me nuts if I don't remember .
Ivyleaf You made me laugh .
Should have completed my tale . As a result of the chugger behaviour and numerous complaints we are now chugger free by order of the council
