Abusive spineless boss - what to do

The OP should be turning up on time, leaving on time, carrying out her normal duties during that time and not slagging off her boss to colleagues. If they have a problem with him that's up to them the OPs problems should if she has any professionalism stay between her and him.
If an employee of mine had resigned in the circumstances the OP did and then started coming into work late or leaving early, I would start a disciplinary against them and/or dock their pay for hours not worked. Whether or not the boss behaved badly, OP is leaving herself wide open to being dismissed before she wants to leave for absenteeism/time fraud and there isn't any excuse for it.
Absolutely, however the O/P shouldnt feel bullied or intimidated into walking out - like many of her other work colleagues have done.
Any reduced notice should be by agreement, and not because it now suits the employer to get rid to make a point.0 -
If she's swanning in and out as she pleases and not working the hours she's contracted to, then the boss isn't firing her to make a point about her hysterics last Friday but for cause after the proper disciplinary process has been followed. In a small company I wouldn't carry anyone and pay them full salary if they decided only to work 2/3 of their contracted hours once they handed their notice in.
As others have said, either OP is suffering work related stress in which case she stops work has it confirmed by the doctor and gets SSP for the remainder of her notice period or she gets over herself and starts and leaves on time until her notice period expires. There isn't some half way house open to her where she sets her own hours, gets paid her full salary and foments discontent amongst the other staff.0 -
I'm not sure where the idea of me talking badly about the manager / dragging other colleagues into it came from? The door was wide open when the incident happened, i didnt tell them, they heard, and are entitled to their own opinions, i did not encourage any 'uprising against the boss' chatter. The middle man colleague was invited and agreed by the boss as a someone also to take notes of the meeting.
In regards to the 'swanning in whenever' Yes you are right, i had those thoughts but i did listen. I was clouded by emotions when i left at 10:30am on monday due to the hostility. But apart from that i was there until work finished after the incident on Friday. In regards to Monday and tues, I did not swan in when i wanted to in the end, sorry if i misled anyone. I wasnt clearly thinking when i said i would last weekend when i started the posts. Both days i arrived early, and earlier than everyone else as per usual, and intend to continue doing so. I only want an earlier exit because of the bullying behaviour, and i will not leave the company in a difficult position without a handover. The boss knows that i am happy to leave and go unpaid at anytime, and the money is not an issue as i do thankfully have some savings and a other half who is fully supportive. Thank you so much for everyones opinion. I guess i will find out whether a shorter notice period will be agreed in the next few days. I will update if anyone might be curious of the outcome,

Didn't you say you left early on Monday after typing up all your bosses transgressions and telling all your colleagues why you were leaving early? If that isnt badmouthing him to colleagues and troublemaking in your book, I'd hate to think what you would consider to be so!
However glad to know you are now working the hours you are paid to do so the risk of being sacked rather than leaving at your own behest is much lessened.0 -
I told them I was leaving earlier than usual as i was too upset to be in the office, and i will be back in the next day, and if they needed anything at all to call me. It does not mean i bad mouthed the boss? I could not help the obvious that was going on. they messaged me first whilst i was in the office to ask if i was ok and they could feel the hostility in the comments from his wife, and the environment. I thought it was only right to tell them i was leaving because i was upset that morning rather than just walking off. staying behind just to bad mouth my boss to everyone was the last thing on my mind, i just wanted to get out of there!0

I have been in your situation where I had a nasty boss and quit my job. My advice to you is to leave on good terms because it will be easier to get your final payment and p45. What about references you will have to put the job on the CV or you will have a gap.
How will you explain your reasons for leaving?0 -
It very competitive on the job market at moment it could take months to find the right job.
You could work your 3 months notice and be looking for a new job at the same time. The relationship had broken down between you and employer there is no point in getting stressed because you will be out of that job in a few weeks.0 -

I did not ask my colleagues to tell the boss I had left, i only told them I was upset so I had to go, nothing more apart from call me if they need me.
I left a note on his wife's desk to tell them both why I had left, she is his secretary, he was in a long meeting. It was cowardice of me, I could not face sitting there any longer.
I do think that some are taking my words out of context, and I do apologise if I am not absolutely clear word for word what was said. I do maintain that I did not bad mouth my boss, i want a shorter notice period, so the last thing I will do is bad mouth him to my colleagues.
It is a small office and everyone somehow knows each others business. I was in the canteen today and 2 production staff said they will miss me when i go. I have told no one in production that I have handed my notice in, word just gets round, i have no idea how they know, i didn't ask. As for the office staff, they obviously witnessed the whole thing and saw me hand my notice in.0
