Avatar image size on new layout bigger?

If you use the green layout for an avatar it says 80 x 80 pixels and the avatar appears as a square. On the new layout the avatar appears as a circle but i've saved the avatar i have as 80 x 80 PNG done as a circle and its too small :huh:
What is the correct size on the new layout?
ETA using PNG with a transparent background. It looks fine on the green layout, but not on the white layout.
