You're right, but I prefer that as it means I shouldn't end up with very small change, although I often do anyway as the self scan machines seem to love to dispense 2 x 5p rather than 1 x 10p.

    .

The reason is Sainsburys and other supermarket self scans have only 6 coin compartments - it doesn't dish out 50p coins out either. As a few years ago, a Sainsburys ss swallowed my money without registering it. The checkout supervisor opened the bottom, pulled out the coin hopper drawer and taken out the amount of money I paid in. Then put the coins through the coins in bit to get my change.

Anyone paying 10p or 50p coins, these coins go into a box inside the self scan

I've never shopped in Aldi as there isn't one near me, however I have shopped at Lidl.

I think it's down to location, I buy lots of fruit and veg and unfortunately the location of the lidl nearest me fruit and veg isn't really what the locals buy. So the selection is poor and very short dated, I really struggled to get anything that wasn't mushy and horrible.

I'd definitely give Aldi a go if one opened up nearby, one of my colleagues has one on his doorstep and raves about it.

You will like Aldi. In my opinion a tad better than Lidl.

But I can say as I live in a town where there are 4 Lidl's and 3 Aldi's.

The store experience and the fruit and veg quality is more down to how the store manager runs it rather than the location.

Why, I thought 50p were legal coinage.

Every other self service I have used elsewhere takes them.

I can see Sainsbury's self service machines committing Harri Kari when the new £1 coin comes in next April.

Sainsburys self scans do accept 50p coins, but they are not given out as change. Most shops use NCR self scans. As used a Boots self scan and put £5 note for a £3.50 item. Change was a pound 2x 20p and 2x 5p.

Sainsburys were the first shop to put the new coin slot over the coins in chute. As self scans kept breaking down as customers, particularly men, grabbed a handful of coins from their pockets and things like screws, fluff etc got trapped in the workings.

It's NCR engineers that fixes and updates machines.

I take it you have never shopped in Aldi then. ;)
Unfortunately I have, many times but gave up as the variety is poor, the meat quality is worse than Iceland and I never thought anyone could be worse than them.

They have a distinct lack of fresh produce. Lidl is slightly better quality wise but I still avoid both as I ended up throwing most away after a couple of days so I was wasting money.
