Sainsbury's are ending their Brand Match scheme.

Obviously they're a private company and can do as they please, but even if any cost from this is re-invested into trying to undercut other supermarkets on own-branded food, I don't see how it will work in their favour. Relatively few people (overall, not just on this site) exclusively buy own-branded food, and those that do generally stick to the supermarket that they know.
From a personal point of view it's a blow. I live nearest to Sainsbury's and Asda - they're literally across the road from one another and within easy walking distance.
Traditionally, I would buy any branded shopping at Asda (cheaper), and my supermarket-branded stuff from Sainsbury's (better quality and usually the same price or a very small amount extra for a much better product). Since brand match has been brought in, I usually do my shopping at Sainsbury's unless I know that something I want is only in stock at Asda (or they have a good deal on meat). Due to travel time, cost of fuel, and the fact that I'm shopping for one, it's generally not worth my while going to other supermarkets unless I'm doing an unusually large shop or happen to be passing (though I do have a tiny Tesco near my work which I sometimes get milk from).
Without the safety net of brand match, I'm back at the point where it's worth going to multiple supermarkets - I still don't trust Asda's own-branded food, and Sainsbury's are definitely not the cheapest on the types of things I tend to lean towards brands for (cheese, alcohol, cereal are the main ones that spring to mind).

Branded cheese? What brands?
Alcohol?...again what brands?
Cereal? I'm inclined to usually buy branded myself....but I don't eat it, the OH does and it's her choice that matters.0 -
nice dietSchool is important, but Rugby is importanter.0

Why not shop at Aldi? The cheese I like is £1.59 for a big block (£4.00 for branded equivalent) and it's just as nice if not nicer.
Same with cereal, I have their version of wheat biscuits - £1.58 (or something similar) if I remember right and I can't tell the difference between them and the branded stuff. Same with rice krispies 75 pence at Aldi.
Can't speak for the alcohol, as I don't drink - but surely worth a try.
My weekly shop went from £45 - £60, down to £28.0 -
Swear by Aldi and Lidl they have halved my shopping I'm shocked on the rare occasion now I do nip to tesco and asda at how much they are and as for Sainsbury's their the most expensive of the lot I tend to find.
I was weary at first about going to Aldi ect but the quality is just as good tbh and there meat is really reasonable they are doing a 250g pack of mince for under £1.70 at the moment and it's not half as fatty as the tesco value mince
Their alcohol particularly the wines have won a few awards and what I've had I've not been disappointed in
Me and another person at work convinced our team leader to give it a go her monthly shop for 2 went from £100 down to about £40-50First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
The main supermarket in our town is Sainsbury. (There used to be a Scotmid/Coop but that closed down). Anything else is more like small convenience stores.
The old Scotmid site is being redeveloped and is apparently being made into an Aldi store ... so let's see.0 -
Shopping start at Poundland and work your way up.
Personally these promotions to me are a waste .The food i like i have to shop at many of the stores rather than just one or two .
Just come back from Tesco and i nearly apologized to the manager for multiple swearing .How f much you must be joking .
For years now 50% plus of my food shopping is Aldi or Lidl based upon quality rather than price .0 -

But do check out Aldi/Lidl first for the stuff you usually buy in Poundland. Things like household cleaners and suchlike are often less than a £ in Aldi/Lidl.0 -
Sainsbury's pricing really irritates me.
They tend to end in a "0" or a "5", (obviously excluding catch-weight items), there's always a nagging suspicion that it's in their favour.
A small tin of branston beans - 33p in Asda, 35p in Sainsbury's. Trifling amounts, most certainly but they all add up.0 -
I use Sainsbury quite a lot - mostly because it's at the end of my road.... Nearest Lidl is a 20 minute walk or 10 min drive. I could save money by splitting my shop but I can and will pay more the convenience.
I've not made a great deal out of Brand Match since a) much of the shop is JS own brand anyway and b) the branded products we do prefer are on offer in Sainsbury 2 out of 3 visits. But I have wombled some decent BrandMatch vouchers so clearly there were shoppers who did buy mostly branded.
Since the rules changed, I've had even fewer - so I won't miss it greatly.I need to think of something new here...0
