I've spent £266 to get my 2001 bangernomic through the MOT. Better the devil you know.
  • Just fixed the centre light ( and the official MOT site says they should have given me the benefit of the doubt anyway ) - Multimeter and tape :-) broken wire..

My chap came back to me after see the vids I took and thinks it will be £200 for all the work and I think about £65 for bits. Plus another MOT so about £300-315

    Thats better :-)

    Why you need another mot?

Additional stop lamps fitted and connected must be tested. Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter.
Why would there be any doubt as to whether they are connected though?
The interpretation that they should be assumed disconnected if not working is not quite correct

True, but to fail it the tester has to be able to prove, without dismantling, that the lamp is complete and the wiring to the lamp is connected.

(it could be disconnected at the other end of the loom, not actually at the bulb)

As they cannot, then it gets an advisory because the manual states

“Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter.”
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

cause after the garage has tried to up the price by 250 quid I wont be taking it back to them. after my chap has done the welding they could turn round and say they don't like how its been done etc out of spite.

so the guy that does my welding takes it up to the garage by him ( he takes all the classic cars he rebuils there to be MOT'd as hes not an MOT garage ) and if they say 'nope' for any reason then he would reweld to whatever standard and I don't pay until the MOT is passed.
  • As you see from the centre lamp debarckle I think they are a bit pedantic and I will no longer use them anymore.

as in....advisory 'front registration plate deteriorated but unlikely to be misread'

I'll let him see if he even thinks the other 2 bits need doing as I not convinced now.

    pedantic? Or proper?
Problem is people have pre-conceived ideas as to whether their car should pass. If it looks pretty and drives well people assume it's the same underneath.

If the welding another garage do doesn't get it through the mot then you want to be taking it back to the welder to answer why he hasn't done a proper job. If he disagrees then I suspect he'd have leverage to get the retest pass.

Sounds like they don't want the work tbh. Welding work can be a nightmare
  • the difference was £360 at the garage for wives micra crossmember ( again VOSA has rules for micra and almera ) vs £120 for my small welder only guy to do it. It passed with the garage so have full confidence in his work just for the sake of £20 can I be bothered to not let him do all the running round and give me 12 month MOT back?

I have no illusions on a 16 year old focus, I check as much as I can but in fairness I didn't check the sills like I normally do. Ive no ramp to test things like AR bushes ( and Im not an MOT tester )

I'm a firm believer in keeping old cars on the road. I had a choice of paying £266 for another year MOT on my Megane, or scrapping it and buying a 206 which was for sale locally for £300 with 10 months MOT.

Chose to fix my car rather than go for the unknown quantity.
