Car insurance about to run out - trying to sell - SORN?
My car insurance runs out tomorrow. I called the insurance company a couple of weeks ago and ask them not to renew it because I am planning on getting rid of the car. I still haven't managed to sell it just yet (but will hopefully sell it in the next week or so).
I'm aware there's a £100 fine for not having insurance. I don't want to take out a new policy just for a few days because then I'll have to pay admin fees etc when I cancel it. I'm aware you can get short-term policies but the'yre a rip off. I don't need to drive the car anywhere, but it is parked on a public road (quiet, residential).
I was thinking of just SORNing it and moving the car onto an even quieter cul-de-sac. Is this reasonable? And what if a buyer wants to take it for a test drive? Any other ideas?

You can't keep it on the road and sorn it. It needs to either come off the road and be sorn or it needs insurance.0

Ok fine let's say I find somewhere to put the car and then I SORN it. Does this give the future buyer any problems?0

Would a test drive be legal even if I hadn't SORN'ed it? Any policy I take out probably wouldn't allow random people to drive the car. If their own policy lets them drive other cars then can they still drive mine (despite the SORN)?
Realistically how many test drives of privately sold cars are actually legal..?
I suppose the main point of my question is: "Does SORNing the car affect its saleability?"0 -
IF the car is SORN'd it cant legally be on the road0

Yes, but if your car is sorn it shouldn't be on the road.
Look with that attitude do as you wish, legal or not.
Don't ask questions if you don't want to hear the answer.0 -
My insurance covers me for cars that are covered by another insurance policy. If your car is not insured then i cannot legally drive it unless i add it to my insurance and then tax it.
If i cannot drive it i will offer you £30.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
There is no way around this. If your car is on a road you need insurance. If you have no insurance you cannot keep it on the road simple as that. Have you thought of scrapping it if it is of low value.0

The £100 fine isn't for not having insurance. It's for having a taxed car that's uninsured. SORNing the car gets you around that.
Having an uninsured, untaxed car on the road is a different - larger - set of fines and points.
Renew the insurance, then cancel the policy when the car sells.
Or take the hit on the sale price, and shift it before the insurance expires.0 -
I found somewhere off the road to keep the car. A friend's driveway (or whatever). Now can people answer the question about whether SORN will put off a buyer / give a buyer problems?0
