Not renewing SKY Contract

Guys
I have been with Sky TV package for 12 months.
DS gone to uni so we don’t really need the TV package as such so decided not to renew the initial 12 month contract.
I rang sky to tell them I will not be renewing my contract, they surprised me by saying I need to pay cancellation fee. I told them I am not cancelling the contract I just don’t want to renew it when it expires, they insist that I still need to give them 1 month notice and as I have one week left I still need to pay them for next 3 weeks.
I am at loss to understand that if I allow the 12 moth contract to expire, I still need to give them one month notice, how bizarre!
Anyway I guess I don’t really have a choice as this unfair clause must be inserted in the fine print :(.

You need to give them 30 day notice of cancellation, seeing as it sounds like you did this a week before your 12 months was up you will be charged for the 3 weeks beyond this.

So to exit without the extra costs you would have had to cancel on or around the 11th month.

Thanks spadoosh for your response, the above statement and in particular 'notice of cancellation' got me irate. I would have thought that contract is fixed term (12 months) so if i dont renew it should end, like most contact do!

Most contracts, at least those assosciated with utilities tend to be on rolling contracts. The other side is too many people complaining after theyve been cut off because they forgot to renew. Dont think they do anyone any favours though by neglecting to communicate clearly when the deal ends and the rolling part begins.

Woth bearing in mind, youll probably be paying the full rate for the services you recieve aswel so the bill is likely to be higher than it is normally.

    Sorry, no good news.

As mentioned there are very few (i dont know of any) fixed term contracts from phone/BB/mobile/Pay TV providers. In fact none of the contract T&C i have ever seen suggest anything other than the contract is a rolling contract with a 'Minimum' term.

You are not alone in believing this though. Its probably one of the commonest complaints on these particular boards.

I would make sure that you have actually given notice as Sky are pretty notorious for making it very difficult to cancel and 'forgetting' or 'having no record' etc of notice requests. Live chat is good (as you can save the transcript), letter by recorded delivery or record your phone calls.

After 12 months , your contract does not end, but any offer does, meaning you pay full price from then onwards.

What, in fact, ends is your minimum term (ie the 12months to which you committed).

To end the contract you have to give 30/31 days notice (it's clearly stated in the T&Cs), but if the leaving date is before the end of the minimum term, you have to pay a pro rata exit fee.

Just realised wouldnt the simplest way of doing this type of thing not just be telling them when you take out the contract that you would like to cancel on <insert date year from start> and then just leave it at that? Why have i never thought about this before, gonns ring sky tonight (only started last week with em) and try it! Bet their systems couldnt handle that though.

You have to give 30 days notice, not eleven months and 29 days.
  • Their systems will handle it and they can place a cancellation on the TV service up to 12 months in advance. Phone and broadband is up to 90 days.

The problem for you would be that you can't change your package during that time and you would not be able to use box office services either.

Thanks guys for your input, i guess you just confirmed what i knew all along that the 30 day clause was hidden somewhere in the fine print.
Better half canceled the DD, guess no implication for that, they will just post us the final bill?
