If you love your wife, do NOT hold it against her and become resentful. Move on, don't allow this person's actions to come between you. And NEVER say 'I told you so' when the 'friend' defaults, as she surely will.

Ive agreed my wife could use our money and she declared to pay it back into our account (hopefully directly form her friend).

You had lots of advice on here, almost all of which was to make a gift of the £3000, not expect anything back, and be pleased if you get something.

Seems like you have ignored this advice and this is still arranged as a loan to your wife's "friend".

This will come back to bite you - whether financially or something you use inadvertently in an argument with your wife. I am not saying this to be unkind, just....what's the phrase.... setting expectations.

Almost a year on and not seen a penny. So for anyone out there who wants to loan money to friend, don't. The friend , regardless of loan or gift should pay it back. The fact that she asked for it at the start shows her clear intentions , for me, to keep it regardless of what she promised. . My wife knew that and avoided any falling out by writing it of as a gift quite early on.

Only just seen this thread and yes we would never loan money to friends. How does your wife feel about the money not being repaid? Does she still see this "friend"?

Also if my husband put me in the same position I would be fuming. £3000 is a lot of money regardless of circumstances and for her to offer it without discussing it with you I think is very unfair. For her then to be willing to accept gifts to pass on from her boss and mother even worse. This friend seems to have an unhealthy hold over your wife. I have some very good friends but I would not do that unless it was life or death which obviously it wasn't.

Thanks for updating the thread, not many bother.

Hopefully a lesson for others who read this in future.

As a matter of interest, are the wife and friend still friends?
