Having a SiL who is gluten & wheat intolerant, and also cannot tolerate any amount of glucose syrup, I would speak to them, and ask what they CAN eat before you do much more planning. I know that my SiL always has stuff with her, and will always settle for a salad!

I would agree to definitely speak to them. Something like bolognese sauce could be made both dairy and gluten free, and served with pasta or baked potatoes as appropriate.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • I am gluten and dairy free (see sig). I really like the Tesco gluten free pasta - tasty and if you cook for 7 mins it doesn't fall apart. You could make pizza with gluten free bases - either make your own or you can buy and just omit the cheese but up the veggies - still really nice. Kettle chips are nice and gluten free. You can use one type of oat cake as they are gluten free - check the supermarket - on the front it states gluten free.

Olives are great for snacking on - get different types.

And veggie sticks and houmous as someone said - delish!!!!

A quinoa salad? Treat it similarly to couscous, add some veg and spice, it could make a good staple that everyone can eat.
    Potato salad? Lentil salad?
Home made salsa, hummus & dips, with tortilla chips, kettle chips, veg sticks.
Cold roast chicken legs or chicken strips? Little sausages?

  • Hi There!

Another gluten free bod here :) If you buy a gluten free pasta go for doves farm as it is the best, it is possible to trick people with that one as I don't know about anyone else as soon as someone mentions it is gf non gf people won't try it obviously thinking it will kill them! grrrrrr sorry off on a tangent there!

in the gf section of the supermarket theres a tub of non cheese sauce mix ( for dairy free), if it was me I would do a pasta bake with doves farms, potato boats / skins ( maybe with onion keeping it veggie) nachos and cheese/ salsa ( tesco and sainsburys basics nachos was 25p in tesco are gf make sure they are cool or original as others are tossed in wheat, will tell you on the back ) and crudite.

Personally I love chilli so maybe a 5 bean chilli instead of mince with rice so it is ok with everyone? I make huge batches of that for cheap including the mince so i assume 5 bean would be cheaper!

ooh ooh you can get in asda , morrisons, sains and tesco gf pitta bread 1.99 for 4 but are tasty could be used as a flatbread/ chopped for hummus/ dips very expensive but equaled out as non gf pitta are around 30p for 6/8 ( jealous now :))

    Hope it helps :)

oh if you do need gf stuff in supermarkets the range varies between each stores branches so I check on the net so I know the store does it, great if you know which store does the home del for your postcode thats how i do mine. May be sold out though but at least you know they do it so not wasted trip!

    Hi there,

When used to run a tea room I always had a carrot cake on the cake board made with Dove farm GF flour, the recipe I use you couldn't tell the difference between that and normal plain flour and t was always just as popular with the non GF customers. It's also oil not butter so as long if eggs ok then dairy free for the rest of it. I used to do it with a buttercream middle and top (obviously not DF) but such a lovely moist cake then you could get away with a simple glace icing. PM me if you'd like the recipe. HTH
  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the gluten free lunches thread to give you more ideas :)

My husband has Coeliacs disease and I find the Marks and Spencers bread and rolls are very good ,almost good enough for me to eat ,he has all the usual in a roll and then I make him a side salad ,he sometimes has potato salad ,cheese is a good option as coeliacs need the calcium ,I can recommend the cakes from M and S very tasty ,I make up a small friut salad and he has a yoghurt with this ,he takes pre cooked jacket Potato's to work and eats them cold with tuna mayo ,cold pizza is also a good option ,either make your own gluten free bases or buy ready made .

Don't do oatcakes for gluten free - oats have gluten in them!

Also be careful with hidden ingredients - for example malt vinegar is made from barley which contains gluten. It depends on the severity - a friend of mine is severly ceoliac, and if I cater for her I have to be really careful.

You can make a gluten-free pastry using special flour - Doves Farm is a good brand. Or you can make crustless quiches.

For dairy free I am assuming eggs are okay? So you can make quiche but use soya milk (not oat milk - thats not gluten free) instead of dairy - no one will be any wiser.

Instead of a pasta salad, maybe a rice salad or a quinoa salad?

For crisps (if you are having any) Walkers are gluten free, or you could have tortilla chips, just be careful with flavours and ingredients such as whey for the daity-free person.

You could maybe make pakora or bhajis? Chickpea flour is gluten free, and is the 'norm' for those items.

    Good luck :)
Some coeliacs can now tolerate oats and you can now gets oats made on a non wheat production line ,I use these to make porridge for my husbands breakfast and also add them to crumble mixes ,I find the juvela flour mix makes lovely cakes if you use butter instead of marg and it is very difficult to tell the difference from normal cakes .
